    What is online bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping involves recording and organizing the daily financial activities of a company — essentially, taking note of money going in and out. This includes paying bills or collecting payments on invoices.

According to Ashlee Anderson, a certified professional career coach who runs the blog, Work From Home Happiness, the responsibilities of an online bookkeeper include:

    • Updating the company’s financial records
    • Creating financial reports
    • Double-checking records for accuracy
    • Recording financial statements using computer programs
    • Classifying debits and credits to their proper accounts

In addition, a bookkeeper may be the one to receive receipts and reimburse employees for work-related expenses. They also take charge of accounts receivable.

How do I become a virtual bookkeeper with no experience?

People often confuse bookkeeping with accountancy. But they are two different career options — and bookkeeping is the one that does not require formal education.

Even those with little to no experience can become a bookkeeper. However, you need to have the following skills and traits, according to the blog, The Work At Home Wife:

    • Organized with keen attention to detail
    • Patience to double-check, even triple-check records
    • Be hardworking
    • Ability to multitask
    • Be compassionate
    • Be personable
    • Be trustworthy

A basic knowledge of accounting software like Quickbooks and Xero, may also be required by clients, according to Mary Anne Bantog, a BS Accountancy graduate and former trainer for Filipina Homebased Moms, an online community that aims to assist and support Filipina mothers in their freelancing journey. But in one of her free webinars for FHMoms, she assures that the two programs mentioned have a user-friendly interface and are easy to learn and understand.

Do you need to be good at math to be a bookkeeper?

The short answer is no — the bookkeeping software you will use can do the math for you. However, it will be a big advantage if you enjoy working with numbers. Remember that you’ll be dealing with a lot of numbers on a daily basis, so you can easily get frustrated or tired if you don’t like what you are doing.

Mistakes can easily happen if you don’t pay attention, so another trait that will give you an advantage is strong attention to detail. Remember to double-check or even triple check the numbers you are recording.

How much can you make as a virtual bookkeeper?

You can earn at least Php15,000 a month if you work as a bookkeeper in the Philippines. However, an online bookkeeper with international clients can start at $8 (Php400) per hour and charge as much as $50 (Php2,550) per hour, according to Mary Anne. That’s around Php65,000 to Php400,000 monthly!
