  • Kids today have it easy. They rarely need a library card to do research. All they need to do is go online and Google it. See, it's even a verb now.

So you would think that in Google's list of most searched "how to" questions it would show the citizens of the world seeking answers to, say, math problems (how to solve this equation or formula). But as it turns out we don't know the answer to a lot of basic stuff,.

"We noticed that 'how to…' searches have increased by more than 140-percent since 2004," Google’s data editor Simon Rogers told the Telegraph, "and much of that search interest is directed towards how to 'fix' things -- whether it’s a light bulb, window, washing machine, or even the toilet."

So which "how-to" search topped the list from 2004 to 2017? The number one spot goes to "how to tie a tie," which we could understand. The second was "how to kiss," and we can't help think there's a particular demographic at play here especially when you check out the third most searched how-to question: how to get pregnant.

The last time we checked, er, the traditional way of conceiving is still the same. It goes by the name of sexual intercourse, and you do it on the day the woman is ovulating ideally. There are also a lot of tips and trick to get lucky. You could even try techniques to have a boy or a girl. And if you still can't conceive, consult a doctor who may suggest intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization

We are taking this how-to question at face value, of course, unless the folks who entered it in the search box had a different intention when he typed how to get pregnant. Perhaps he wanted to know about pregnancy so he could avoid it?

On the website entitled "How To Fix a Toilet And Other Things We Couldn't Do Without Search," data journalist Xaquín González Veira wrote, "A good chunk of the most-searched 'How Tos' sound as if they were asked by someone between 12 and 21 (30 you may even say). They show the terribly sweet, innocent, romantic ignorance of our teens." (It did not state explicitly that the search came from teens.)

This data from Google should convince us parents that we do need to talk sex to the kids.

Then, again, when you search on Google for "how to get pregnant," a lot of the results on the first page are about how to get pregnant quickly. One could argue that there is an increasing number of adults having trouble conceiving since more couples are delaying marriage or having kids. Or maybe couples are just excited to have a bun in the oven? That's also a probable explanation.

The other "how-to" searches that made the all-time top 10 are how to:

    • lose weight
    • draw
    • make money
    • make pancakes
    • write a cover letter
    • make french toast
    • lose belly fat

Hey, it all sounds like Christmas is over and a new year is upon us!
