17 Memorable Promises Made at the PiliPinas Debate 2016
  • For the last leg of the PiliPinas 2016 presidential debate, we were glad to see that the candidates resorted to less personal attacks, and based on social media accounts, gave more substantial answers compared to previous debates. (Read the entertaining moments of the debate here.)

While we were disappointed that family and education were not tackled, we’re glad to see health, which was on our wish list of topics to be covered, was one of the six national issues all five presidential candidates had to address. The other five national issues were West Philippine Sea, traffic, permanent employment, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and peace in Mindanao.

Here’s a review of some of the more substantial answers, or we should say, promises in our last presidential debate.

    On health

    Vice President Jejomar Binay:

Sapagkat ngayon sa ating Philhealth kailangan pa rin may out of pocket.”

    Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago:
“We should stop the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office from demanding a letter of recommendation from a politician before they attend to a request for funding for the poor. Number two, I oppose the privatization of hospitals because it drives the cost of medicines upward.”

    On the West Philippine Sea

    Defensor-Santiago:

    On solving traffic

    Binay:

    Former interior secretary Mar Roxas:

    On employment

    Mayor Rodrigo Duterte:
“The moment I assume the presidency contractualization will stop. They have to stop it…that is an injustice committed against the people of the Republic of the Philippines.”

    Roxas:

    On supporting OFWs

    Poe:

    Defensor-Santiago:
“The best way we can help OFWs is not to make it a necessity for them to leave. Puwede sa kanilang option, but not a necessity. That’s why we need to build up our own strong economy.”

    On their closing statements

    Binay:

    Defensor-Santiago:
“We are not looking for an ordinary leader or an ordinary manager or administrator. We are looking for the President of the Philippines.”

    Duterte:
“Corruption must stop. If I have the presidency for 2 weeks tapos walang sususnod then even if you give me ten years I will not be able to do it.”

    Poe:

    Roxas:
“We are a generous people, we are warm, we are loving. Mapagbigay tayo. We do with so much less because we want our children to have more. And they deserve more. Every Filipino deserves more.”
