So Far, CALABARZON Registers Highest Number Of Births In 2020 (January Is Baby Boom Month)

It looks like the country started off with a baby boom before the quarantine forced couples to stay home 24/7. According to data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), January 2020 has the highest number of births this year so far.

CALABARZON had the highest number of live births, with 95,069 babies born during the first month of the year. The National Capital Region (NCR) comes in second with 86,516 new babies, while Region III registered 74,619 newborns. 

Cavite had the most "active" couples (perhaps since last year), birthing 26,519 babies in total. The second place goes to Cebu province with 22,984 newborns. Bulacan had 20,392, Rizal had 20,0561, and Pangasinan registered 19,240 live births. 

In NCR, Quezon City is the top babymaker city with 19,746 live births. Manila and Caloocan are right up there, though with fewer newborns, with 12,404 and 11,273 live births, respectively. 
The other big cities welcomed less than 10,000 new babies. Davao City recorded 9,828 live births, while Cebu City had 7,670. 

The Philippines welcomed 655,729 new babies so far, with boys outnumbering girls 29,301. But these numbers only cover the first half of the year, from January to June 2020. Those who got pregnant during quarantine, which started in March, are set to give birth in December or beyond. 

February is 'I Do' month 

If newborns dominated January, February tallies the highest number of marriages registered in the PSA this year. 

Out of 107,216 marriages from January to June 2020, 40,587 were registered in February. Next is 36,231 marriages during the first month of the year.

Unions were almost halved in March, with 12,801 registered marriages. It then drastically dropped in April 2020, with only 703 registered marriages across the country. It only picked up again in May with 3,348 and in June with 13,546 marriages. 

CALABARZON, NCR, and Region III remain in the top three for registered marriages as well.

Compared to 2019, registered marriages are significantly lower this year. Weddings, like other types of mass gatherings, were prohibited during general community quarantine. Couples who wish to get married can still go ahead but with limited guests.
