3 Biggest Lessons Teen Queen Kathryn Bernardo Will Never Forget
  • Teenage life is probably the most difficult stage to handle for both parent and child. For the teen, it's the time of raging hormones, the pressure to belong, and life-altering decisions. For the parents, it is a struggle, too, as our teens try to (or think themselves to) be independent.

In her new book, Everyday Kath: 365 Ways To Be A Teen Queen, actress Kathryn Bernardo shares not just style tips, beauty tricks and hair hacks, but also life lessons she has gathered in her ripe age of 20.

Kathryn, who has spent most of her life in the spotlight, credits her parents for her maturity. "Mas naging mature ako mag-isip because of [my parents'] guidance, and I’m really thankful...na hanggang ngayon masasabi ko na kailangan ko talaga sila. 'Di naman porket 20 years old na ako, alam ko na lahat. Kino-consult ko pa rin sila sa mga bagay."

Like most kids, however, Kath admits her relationship with her mom is not perfect. They have their misunderstandings, but these paved the way for her to know right from wrong.

Smart Parenting asked Kathryn how she nurtured her relationship with her parents. Here are her nuggets of wisdom. (Moms and dads, if your kids are fans of this Teen Queen, you may want share this article with them--you never know it may encourage them to listen to you more.)

1 Be open with your parents.
"Nakatulong talaga yun 'pag nag-uusap kayo tapos nagsasabi ka ng mga secrets mo kasi maiintindihan ka nila." Kathryn also said in her book that whenever she needed a confidence boost, she looked to her Mom for encouragement and reassurance.

    2. Don’t bother hiding things from them.
"I swear, lahat nalalaman nila. So 'wag ka na magtatago kasi malalaman at malalaman din nila kung anong nasa isip mo." She also believes that the one important thing to remember about surviving the teenage years is to be yourself—it’s the first step to making friends, finding out what you really like, and discovering who you are.

    3. Be thankful.
"May mga stage kasi tayo na minsan naiinis ka [sa parents mo]. Pero at the end of the day you will realize na 'buti ikaw may parents ka na who gives you guidance--yung iba wala.’" She also writes in her book: “My family has always guided me through life’s hardest decisions. They’ll always be my biggest fans. My ate, my papa, my mama—they’ve been nothing but supportive.”
