LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery that corrects eye conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. The operation involves the creation of a flap of corneal tissue, followed by the reshaping or remodeling of the cornea with laser. The last step is the repositioning of the flap. A blade is used to create a flap, which is actually a thin part of the cornea. This operation is recommended for individuals 18 years old and above.

Despite the seeming invasiveness of the procedure, Daphne chose to push through with the operation. She had to have herself screened, as the eye experts needed to make sure that she was perfectly-suited for the operation. “You have to qualify. There are people who cannot have it,” Daphne explains.

Daphne psyched herself up for the operation and was amazed at how long the preparation process took (patients have to refrain from wearing glasses or soft contact lens one week prior to the operation; for hard lens wearers, six weeks prior). The actual surgery, though, lasted for what felt like just five minutes. “You’re done? That’s it?”, she remembers thinking. “It didn’t hurt.”

After the procedure, she slept for about five hours and then watched a Sex and The City marathon. She went straight to work the next day. “It’s complete freedom,” she shares. “I always say to people, ‘The two biggest decisions in my life were to get married and to get LASIK.’ Talagang life-changing. Imagine never having to wear glasses! Now I can wear fashion sunglasses.”
