Call for Breastfeeding Support Groups at 'Ondoy' Evacuation Centers
UNICEF/ WHO consultant, Alessandro Iellamo, is appealing to trained breastfeeding counselors to lend their time to breastfeeding mothers in evacuation centers.
With evacuation centers overwhelmed with displaced families, breastfeeding mothers are in need of support. Breastfeeding during emergencies and calamities is vital for the health of infants as breast milk is packed with immunological benefits and probiotics.
According to Iellamo, UNICEF, WHO and DOH are trying to support mothers who want to nurse their babies during this trying time. They are looking for trained breastfeeding support groups that may be willing to donate some of their time and provide breastfeeding counseling in key evacuation centers in Metro Manila (Marikina and Pasig). There is funding being allocated to cover basic costs for volunteers.
Illeamo can be reached at alessandro.iellamo@ gmail.com. He is willing to meet with organizers and discuss further.
Note: With a supertyphoon forecasted to arrive on Saturday, please practice caution in your planned volunteer activities.
