Cebu has achieved a major milestone in its campaign against cybercrime and child abuse after a couple from Cordova was found guilty of peddling their own kids online.
The couple was sentenced by the Mandaue City Regional Trial Court to 15 years in prison for sexually exploiting their three minor children by live-streaming lewd acts to foreigners for cash.
They were also ordered by the court to provide a total amount of P600,000 as moral damages awarded to their children, SunStar Cebu reported.
Senior Insp. Sheryl Bautista, who led the entrapment and rescue operation, said this was the first successful anti-pornography operation decided by the court in Cebu.
“Hopefully, this will be an inspiration to other law enforcement agencies to pursue similar cases,” she said.
Meanwhile, the International Justice Mission (IJM) team in Cebu lauded the decision through a Facebook post. "We commend the court that delivered a just prison sentence of 15 years, and we invite your prayers for reconciliation in this family."
It was last September 4, 2013 when the police’s Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force along with IJM apprehended the suspects at their home, where they rescued the three sisters aged 3 to 11 years old.
The sisters are safe and doing well in an aftercare home. According to an IJM Cebu social worker, the eldest survivor, now 14, wants to be a psychologist herself.
IJM assured that the children are now doing well in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
