  • In light of the class suspensions ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte to help contain the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) has released social distancing guidelines to be practiced by schools in and outside the National Capital Region (NCR).

In a statement on its official Facebook page, DepEd says that the suspension of classes in NCR constitutes a social distancing measure to help slow down the community transmission of COVID-19. The class suspensions had been advised by the expert panel of the Department of Health (DOH) and decided by the President with the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

The social distancing guidelines to be observed by all DepEd schools are the following:

For schools in the NCR, all teachers, with the supervision of the Regional Schools Division and school officials, are to schedule all remaining 4th Quarter Examinations to the week of March 16 to 20, 2020 on a staggered basis to lessen the number of students in the school premises.

The students will only come to school on the week of March 16 to 20 on the day of their examination schedules.

For school outside the NCR, all teachers are to use March 11 to 13 for any 4th Quarter Examinations that had already been scheduled or to catch up with remaining class requirements and schedule all remaining 4th Quarter Examinations to the week of March 16 to 20 on a staggered basis.

The students will only come to school on the week of March 16 to 20 on the day of their examination schedules.

After the 4th Quarter Examinations have been taken, other school requirements shall be done as home-based assignments. Should there be a need for students to go to school, the schools shall observe all applicable COVID-19 precautions.

Regarding moving up and graduation rites, each school can choose to hold these events on the week of April 13 to 17, 2020, taking into consideration the DOH’s applicable guidelines regarding mass gatherings. Should the public health situation prevent the holding of such rites within that week, the schools, in consultation with teachers and parents, may opt to reschedule or forego the holding of rites.

Private schools are also encouraged to adopt the social distancing guidelines listed above.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones says that the agency’s social distancing measures for schools “will only be effective if students, parents, and the local governments will do their part in ensuring that students avoid places like malls, movie houses, markets, and similar crowded places.”

The statement concludes, “DepEd will continue to closely monitor the situation and shall continue to take informed, coordinated and proportionate decisions, in close consultation with DOH and other members of the IATF, to contribute to meeting the challenge of containing and managing COVID-19.”
