What’s the fanciest child car seat ever imagined? We’re not sure, but it’s most likely Volvo’s Excellence Child Seat Concept.
Volvo recently unveiled its latest luxury SUV, the XC90, and they’ve been thinking of ways they can tweak it for customers with high-profile lifestyles. The answer: a copious amount of leg room and no passenger seat. They’re naming this re-imagined version of the XC90 the Excellence Child Seat Concept.
In place of the passenger seat is a space designed just for baby. It’s the ultimate in child car seat luxury.
Completely filling up the space where the passenger seat used to be is an elevated child car seat. It sits on top of a spacious storage compartment for all of baby’s essentials – blankets, pillows, diapers, etc. If the family’s on a long drive, there’s even more room beside the seat and in front of it, under the dashboard, perfect for a baby bag.
The child car seat faces the rear, so the baby is facing the passenger in the second-row.
“Being able to maintain eye contact with your child from the rear seat… would go a long way towards making life easier for parents taking their small child on a trip,” said Tisha Johnson, Volvo’s Chief Designer of Interiors.
This is important as the company was the first to introduce the rear-facing child seat to the world back in 1964. According to Volvo, children up to 3- or 4-years old should sit facing the rear because they lack muscle strength in their necks and they have a disproportionate head size and weight in relation to the body.
The child seat’s not stationary though. It can rotate to face the door of the car so you can easily seat baby into his seat, as well as swivel to face the driver.
And as an added bonus, the cup holders are heated to keep baby’s bottle warm.
“We have been investigating the nature of progressive luxury for some time and we see a direct connection between luxury and emotional wellbeing.
So we have taken the next step in redefining how the interior of a car can be used to suit our customers’ needs,” said Johnson.
