  • DOST-developed Contraption Effectively Kills Dengue-carrying Mosquitoes

The OL Trap kills hatched larvae upon contact and curbs the dengue-carrying mosquito population.

  • The Department of Health recently announced that the number of dengue cases from January 1 to February 4, 2012 is 60% lower than the figures from the same period last year, totaling only 4,753 compared to 2011’s 12,044.

While this is good news, the mortality cases from dengue fever cannot be ignored, as there have already been 23 deaths from it in the country since the beginning of the year. Moreover, dengue has ceased to be a seasonal disease; it is now a year-round threat, affecting even babies less than a month old (according to the DOH report).

The dengue virus is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito specie, and as of yet no vaccine has been developed to fight the disease or cure its symptoms. Lessening the chances for exposure to the agents therefore remains the best defense against it.

Recently, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Industrial Technology Development Institute has developed a breakthrough product which helps curb the population of the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquitoes by killing their eggs upon contact with the solution, thereby preventing further proliferation.
