  • Filipina Baby Brings World Population to 7 Billion

Born 2 minutes before October 31, Danica May symbolizes the ever-growing world population.
  • 7 billionth babyThe world’s population has now ballooned to 7 billion, according to the United Nations (UN), with the birth of Danica May Camacho, a premature baby girl from the Philippines.

Born last October 31 at the Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila one month before she was due, Danica May, who weighed 5.5 pounds, was chosen by the United Nations to symbolize the global population milestone in the Philippines. A “seven billionth” baby was selected in other countries as well.

According to the UN Population Fund, Asia holds 60% of the world’s total population, with China still holding the top spot as the most populous country at 1.35 billion, followed by India at 1.24 billion. The Philippines is 12th on this list.

This population explosion is rooted from, among others, the lack of access to reproductive health information and services. In the Philippines, the poorest families have an average of 6 children, with more women between the ages of 15 and 19 having unplanned pregnancies due to unprotected sex, aside from HIV cases which have risen in the last few months.

Dr. Eric Tayag of the Philippines' Department of Health warns, "Seven billion is a number we should think about deeply. We should really focus on the question of whether there will be food, clean water, shelter, education and a decent life for every child," Dr. Tayag says. "If the answer is 'no,' it would be better for people to look at easing this population explosion."

While majority of Filipinos are in favor of family planning, much needs to be done in order to properly educate them and make modern family planning methods available to them.
