Gardenia Philippines Issues Official Statement After Bread Video Scandal

  • A viral video made the rounds of social media platforms that showed a Gardenia delivery personnel opening packed slices of Gardenia bread and stealing slices of bread from each pack. The Gardenia delivery personnel then proceeded to re-close each bag and return it to the crate (see the video below).

    The said delivery personnel is now undergoing administrative due process.

    Gardenia Philippines issued two statements concerning the viral video via its official Facebook account. Gardenia Its first statement on September 19, 2019 acknowledged the incident did happen, and the bread company was investigating the matter.

    The next day, Gardenia Philippines put up another post that clarified the Gardenia delivery personnel stole slices of bread from packs that were supposed to be returned to the plant for disposal. It was NOT fresh stocks for delivery to stores.

    According to Gardeniam it pulls out unsold bread from stores and replaces these with fresh stocks every day of delivery.

    "Gardenia wishes to clarify the video that has gone viral online showing a delivery man taking slices of bread from loaf packs. The slices he took were from pulled out loaves from stores which will be returned to the plant for disposal, NOT from fresh stocks for delivery to stores. As part of our freshness policy, Gardenia pulls out unsold breads from stores and replaces these with fresh stocks every day of delivery.

    "Unfortunately, in this isolated case, the delivery man took out bread slices from pulled out loaves for his personal use. This is a violation of company rules and procedures. The personnel involved is now undergoing administrative due process."

    Gardenia Philippines also made it a point to reassure consumers that keeping the quality and safety of their products and the welfare of their consumers is top priority. According to Gardenia Philippines, "Rest assured that we are doing our best we could to serve our customers with the best quality products and services, nonetheless."

    A number of Gardenia consumers expressed their concern on the post, stating that it would be best to seal the bread to avoid any mishandling in the future. Currently, Gardenia uses bread clips or bread tags to close the plastic packaging of their sliced bread.
