Ina Raymundo Credits Her Husband For Helping Her Overcome DepressionWhen Ina was going through depression, it helped a lot that she could talk to her then-fiance about what she was going through.by Rachel Perez .
Former "Sabado Nights" girl and sexy momma of five Ina Raymundo has previously revealed that she, too, has battled depression, and she now gives an honest take on her experience, saying her husband, Brian Poturnak, played a crucial role in her recovery.
"It happened in 2002 after I gave birth to my eldest child," Ina told Inquirer.net. The then-26-year-old preggo didn't know a thing about eating healthy, so she ate a lot and developed gestational diabetes while she was carrying Erika in her womb. Ina had to see a dietician to prevent more complications, she revealed in an earlier interview with Smartparenting.com.ph.
Her pregnancy was a blessing in that she learned how to eat healthy, but it was also a massive blow to her self-esteem, triggering her depression. "I gained so much weight, and the stretch marks on my tummy started coming out," she said, adding "I cried a lot. I was like, 'Oh my gosh! New moms are especially vulnerable to experiencing baby blues or the more severe condition, postpartum depression (PPD). They are an easy target due to the demands of caring for and raising a child.
It was unclear if Ina was officially diagnosed to have PPD, but the42-year-old actress revealed to Smartparenting.com.ph that she experienced both postpartum depression and the baby blues after welcoming her second child, son Jakob. Overcoming PPD was a turning point in Ina's life, and she says two things helped her rise to the challenge: Finding and renewing her faith in God was one—"Battling depression led me to become a Christian," she said; the other is Brian, her husband of 15 years (and counting!).ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
At the time Ina went through depression, a lot of things were going her way: she just had a new baby, and she was newly-engaged to Brian. "I couldn’t explain why I was feeling empty," Ina recalled. It helped that Ina could share with Brian what she was going through then. "I was so honest to him, and he was very supportive. He assured me that I’m going to be okay," Ina said.
Brian was also her "fit-spiration" who inspired her to hit the gym. "Working out makes you feel better. It increases the level of serotonin, a hormone that battles depression, in your body," Ina explained. "Sweating it out helped," she added. "Now, I’m more fit than when … I was still single." She is also more conscious now of what she eats.
Now active again in show business, Ina stars in the 2018 Cinemalaya movie Kuya Wes, which touches on the topic of mental health. "Mental issues, particularly depression, is becoming more common, especially because of our use of social media. People end up comparing themselves to others who seem to have perfect lives,” she emphasized. Ina wants her kids Erika, Jakob, and younger daughters Mikaela, Anika, and Minka to see her and Brian as their fit-spiration. She also hopes that by being able to talk about mental health, she would serve as a good role model for them.
