Following an earlier announcement that kasambahays may soon be eligible for a Php1,500 wage hike, the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-National Capital Region (RTWPB-NCR) has formally approved the salary increase of domestic workers in Metro Manila, according to the Philippine News Agency.
Under Wage Order No. NCR-DW-02, the new monthly minimum wage rate will be at Php5,000 once the order takes effect.
“The Board agreed to provide for wage adjustments for domestic workers with immediate relief measures to manage the rising cost of living,” the RTWPB-NCR said in a statement.
Wage Order No. NCR-DW-02 will take effect 15 days after it is published in a newspaper of general circulation. According to a report by Rappler, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced that kasambahays may receive the Php1,500 increase in their monthly pay starting January 2020.
“The wages of domestic workers shall be paid in cash at least once a month. No deductions shall be made other than those mandated by law,” said the RTWPB-NCR. It added that no exceptions to the wage order are allowed.
The order will cover all kasambahays, whether or not they are employed on a live-in or live-out set-up. They include the following:
Service providers, family drivers, children under foster family arrangements, and persons who perform work occasionally or sporadically are not covered by the order.
For kasambahays working through private employment agencies, which provide the services of domestic workers, the order requires clients of the agencies to shoulder the cost of the wage increase. Contracts should likewise be amended to provide for this, said the RTWPB-NCR.
According to the DOLE, those who violate the new wage order may be fined Php10,000 up to Php40,000 and “aggrieved parties may file without prejudice appropriate civil and/or criminal action.”
Prior to the issuance of the new wage order, the monthly floor wage for domestic workers was at Php3,500.
