The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is looking into grounding the entire fleet of Lionair Inc, whose aircraft exploded on the runway of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) during takeoff last night, March 29, 2020, killing 8 people.
Lionair has been involved in two fatal accidents in the last six months, according to CAAP deputy director general Donald Mendoza, thus the recommendation.
"Right now the initial action that we are looking into is grounding the whole fleet. It’s quite alarming. We will be looking at the records deeply of Lionair," he said, in a report by the Inquirer.
On Sunday night, the chartered plane with registry number RP-C5880 on a medical evacuation mission to Haneda, Japan burst into flames just as it was taking off at the end of NAIA's Runway 24. None of the passengers — six Filipinos and two foreign nationals — survived, according to Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Ed Monreal.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
