CHED says okay with mandatory drug testing for college students
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) released memorandum order No. 64 that allows higher education institutions (HEI) to conduct mandatory drug testing for the incoming school year 2018-2019. But these institutions are not required to implement the drug testing. CHED "strongly encourages" them to adopt it as part of the requirements for admission and retention policies. If HEIs do adopt the practice, only drug facilities, physicians, and private medical practitioners accredited by the Department of Health can do the drug tests, and the results of all drug tests will remain confidential. Students who refuse to undergo drug testing is subject to sanctions provided in the student handbook. "If the student is found to be drug dependent, the appropriate sanction, intervention, and/or rehabilitation shall be imposed on the student as may be provided in the student handbook and other school policies," the order said. 'Wait Until 8th' campaign aims to delay giving cell phones to kids
According to its website, the Wait Until 8th pledge encourages parents to band together and delay giving their young children their smartphones at least until they reach Grade 8. It had started when a group of moms noticed that first and second graders came to school play dates and birthday parties with the latest smartphone model. The campaign stresses that smartphones impair sleep, interfere with relationships, are addictive, and set kids up for an increased risk of anxiety and depression. When more moms unite to hold off giving their young children cell phones, the campaign says it will help decrease the desire for kids to want a smartphone and ease the pressure on parents to give their child one just because "everyone else has them."
