  • One of Meryll Soriano's New Year's resolutions this 2022 is to start wearning from breastfeeding her and her partner Joem Bascon's one-year-old son Gido.

"It’s been a year," the actress said in the latest episode of her Dear Mama Meme series on YouTube. "Sabi ko, one year lang akong magbi-breastfeed. Eh dito lang naman ako sa bahay, so bakit hindi, di ba?

"But, of course, I want to start weaning na. Andito na si Daddy Joem, tapos na ang lock-in taping n’ya for more than a month. So I’ll try. But I know Gido doesn’t want. Masyado s’yang attached. I’m really hoping na magawan ko ng paraan kung paano s’ya iwe-wean." (For tips on weaning from breastfeeding, read here.)

Meantime, Meryll just continues feeding solid food to Gido, her second from her 14-year-old panganay, Eli. She said in her previous vlog that the little boy loves anything she feeds him, from fruits and veggies to tilapia and quinoa. His favorite dessert is kiat-kiat. He's simply maganang kumain.

She pointed out, "We're just encouraging him to eat kung ano ang kinakain namin dito sa bahay. Kasi ayokong lumaki siyang picky eater, kagaya ni Eli...Picky eater kasi si Eli. Sanay 'yan kung ano lang ang gusto n'ya.

"But we're trying to change that with Gido. We're encouraging him na kung ano ang pagkain sa table, kung ano ang niluto, 'yun din ang kakainin. Also encouraging to hold their food, put food in their mouth, and magkalat."

She went on sharing these tips with her fellow moms who also have young kids: "Sana huwag nating sabihan na, 'O kailangan malinis lagi.' Because they're very young and they're still discovering and exploring with their hands. So let them be."

    Personal resolutions

As for herself, Meryll said she would like to start reading books again, explaining, "Every year, laging ito ang New Year’s resolution ko, na hindi ko natutupad. Pero gusto ko na siyang gawing routine every year. Ang gusto ko ay mag-start ulit magbasa. I don’t know why hindi ako nakakatapos ng libro."

The mom of two is also determined to limit her sugar intake, after experiencing gestational diabetes while she was pregnant with Gido. She said, "No sweets six times a week. Ibig sabihin, meron akong cheat day. Siyempre kailangan ko ’yun. Nakaka-happy ’yun.

"But sugar is my frenemy, so I’m hoping na matupad ko ang once a week--dapat nga one a month--na cheat day. And, of course, eat healthy."

She added, "Ipagpatuloy ko ang pagwo-work out ko and pagiging strong and empowered woman. Because, of course, meron tayong inaalagan na toddler na dahil isang taon na s’ya."

Meryll, who has published a photography book called Playground: London (2014), is bent on nurturing her "creative and active mind" in 2022.

She confessed, "Alam ko naman last year, motherhood brain lang ako. ’Yun lang ang inatupag ko. Madami rin akong projects na gustong matuloy this year at ma-boost ulit ang aking creativity. So I would like to do more art and more design, to collaborate with other artists."

When Meryll asked Joem for his own resolutions, The Broken Marriage Vow actor hesitated at first. But he eventually he said, "Tigilan ko na mag-rice. ’Tapos titigilan ko nang gumamit no’ng gano’n..." He made some gestures like pouring things.

"Ah, seasoning," said Meryll, as Joem added another fatherly resolution: "Mag-ipon for Gido."
