Nickelodeon theme park in Coron to push through - DOT
Secretary Wanda Teo of the Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed on Tuesday, June 1, that the proposed construction of a theme park in Coron, Palawan is pushing through, but clarified that it will be a resort and attraction and not an underwater theme park. She says the owners and developer also guaranteed that they will not destroy, but rather help, preserve the marine ecosystem in the area.
Coron Counselor and Tourism Committee Chairman Michael Sadhwani, however, said that the developers have not given any formal communication since their initial meeting. Before the project could push through, Coral World Park would still have to go through the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development and the Econ Board, an environmental committee, and pass all the requirements before processing the approval.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
The plans to build the controversial Coral World Park Undersea Resorts, which was proposed in partnership with Nickelodeon's parent company Viacom International Media Network, was first reported in January and was met with harsh criticism and strong opposition from citizens who raised concerns about its effects on the environment. DepEd approves tuition fee increase in elementary and high schools
The Department of Education (DepEd) has given the go-ahead for 1,013 private elementary and high schools across the country to increase their tuition for school year 2017 - 2018. That's eight percent lower than the total number of schools which implemented a tuition hike last year, according to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones. She added that the schools' requests for increase in tuition was approved as the additional 70 percent of the additional funds would be used to augment their teachers' salaries, "because the disparity of the income between public and private school teachers is widening,” Briones told Inquirer.net. Kitty Duterte defends family from basherADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
When a netizen criticized the President's youngest daughter when she posted a photo of herself from her family's trip to Russia, Veronica (nicknamed Kitty) defended her family and didn't mince words. The basher implied that they were having a vacation at the expense of Filipino taxpayers’ money, to which she replied that her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, was on a business trip. "He was working and we went with him. Nagtatrabaho at may sweldo siya," she said.
However, when the same basher called her mom Honeylet Avanceña a mistress, Kitty unleashed cuss-filled reply. "Oh, and one more thing, they (Duterte and ex-wife Elizabeth Zimmerman - Ed.) were annulled years before my mother and father started seeing each other. Be sure to know what you're talking about and who you're talking to first," Kitty retorted.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
While many of her followers lauded what she did, some questioned her choice of words, saying they were harsh. Kitty replied that she will defend her mom from anyone who insults her. "I'm a girl who stands up for herself and for her family and a girl who refuses to let idiots bring her down," she added. (pep.ph)
PH ranks 96th in "End of Childhood" report
Non-profit organization Save The Children released its End of Childhood 2017 report yesterday, June 1, also known as International Children's Day, and according to it, the Philippines ranked 96th out of 172 countries. The report looks at factors that could end childhood: when the child dies, is severely malnourished or stunted in growth, not going to school, starts working, when the child marries, has children, or is a victim of extreme violence. The top three factors that pulled down the Philippine ranking were the number of child deaths, stunted kids, and adolescents giving birth to babies.
Save the Children's health and nutrition adviser Dr. Amado Parawan explained that the low performance of the country was due to Filipino kids' chronic undernutrition, starting from the womb. Women who don't have access to proper nutrition give birth to babies with low-birth weight, which makes them prone to diseases and even death. The other factor, Dr. Parawan pointed out, is because the poor people don't have access to basic services and knowledge to help them overcome poverty. (gmanetwork.com)
Coming soon: 'My Neighbor Totoro' theme park!ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Japanese animation film studio Studio Ghibli had just announced its plans to build a new theme park based on animation guru Hayao Miyazaki's 1988 beloved film, My Neighbor Totoro. The new theme park is reportedly set to rise on a 200-acre park which was previously used for the Nagoya Expo in 2005. No concrete details about the project have been made public yet, but many fans are already hoping it will fully recreate the world of Totoro, including the guests being able to enjoy eating foliage from the world's four seasons. We'll have to wait until 2020 to find out. Studio Ghibli already manages a museum dedicated to the works of Miyazaki and other Ghibli animators in Mitaka suburb of Tokyo. The government of Nagoya's Aichi Prefecture has also worked with the studio for an exhibition in 2015. (mashable.com)ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
