Prodex-B Drug A Possible Cure For COVID-19? 'Baseless,' The FDA SaysThe agency issued a warning earlier this weekby Lei Dimarucut-Sison .
Claims that a drug combination called "Prodex-B" can cure those who are suffering from COVID-19 are "baseless," the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Monday.
Prodex-B is said to be a mix of three different drugs: Procaine, Dexamethasone, and Vitamin B — thus, Prodex-B.
"The drug combination of Procaine and Dexamethasone with Vitamin B called 'Prodex-B' is circulating in various media platforms and claims that it has promising effects against viral infections and diseases.
"However upon verification, the drug product 'Prodex-B' is unregistered in this Office," FDA Advisory No. 2020-452 said.
According to the advisory, procaine is an anesthetic — a drug used to manage pain, or literally, to induce temporary loss of sensation.
Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, helps ease swelling and itching and is used to treat asthma or arhtritis. The FDA, however, warns that it can bring about side effects like a "weaker immune system leading to vulnerability to infections."ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWCONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
Because Prodex-B is not registered with the FDA, the agency added that it cannot guarantee the quality, safety, and efficacy of the drug.
The FDA advised those who have taken the drug Prodex-B to be vigilant about experiencing side effects, and to seek medical attention immediately if they do.
As of yet, there is still no cure for COVID-19, although clinical trials for a vaccine is underway.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
