Are You Ready for the SpongeBob SquarePants Spinoff Series? Aye, Aye, Captain!Everyone’s favorite sea sponge is returning for a new show!by Kate Borbon .
Good news, kids and kids-at-heart: Nickelodeon has announced that everyone’s favorite sea sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants, is returning for a spinoff series tentatively titled Kamp Koral!
A press release from Nickelodeon confirmed the network has given the spinoff show the green light and that it is slated to begin production this July at their facilities in Burbank, California, USA. Kamp Koral is to be helmed by Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller, who will serve as co-executive producers.
Kamp Koral has been confirmed for at least 13 episodes and will be CG-animated, following in the footsteps of the most recent SpongeBob feature film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, instead of being executed as a classic 2D cartoon like the original show.
The original series, which premiered nearly 20 (yes, 20!) years ago, follows SpongeBob and his friends as they get into hilarious and sometimes strange adventures. While SpongeBob is an adult in the original show, in Kamp Koral, he will be depicted as a 10-year-old attending camp with his pals.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
“In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral,” says the press release from Nickelodeon.

Aside from the fact that the series itself is well-loved among young and old viewers all over the world, there are plenty of other reasons why the news of the SpongeBob spinoff is so special. For one, the green light for the show comes just before SpongeBob SquarePants’ 20th anniversary on July 17. This occasion will be marked by a tribute entitled Best Year Ever, which will include a one-hour special called SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout, premiering on July 12, 2019.
Another reason why you should be excited for Kamp Koral is that it is only the first of multiple spinoff projects Nickelodeon is developing for the SpongeBob SquarePants universe. Deadline reports that Brian Robbins, president of Nickelodeon, announced earlier this year that the network is also working on other projects intended to focus on other well-known characters from the show.CONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
“SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world,” Ramsey Naito, EVP Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon, tells Deadline.
Aside from spinoff series, you can also look forward to another SpongeBob feature film entitled The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, slated for a 2020 release. This movie will be the follow-up to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015).
