  • Sushmita Sen, who was crowned 1994 Miss Universe at the pageant held in the Philippines, is now a proud mother of two. The 43-year-old beauty queen from India shared a video of her 10-year-old daughter Alisah reciting an essay she wrote about “adopting a child from the orphanage”.

On her Instagram account last November 10, 2019, she shared the video and captioned it with her favorite lines: “You gave life in such a way, that you saved one.' #alisahsen... She had me in tears... This magnitude of love, acceptance, security, purity and honesty... the divinity in her convictions... uffff! Just listening to her opens the heart. #bornfromtheheart. I love you guys.”

Adoption is one topic that people try to avoid talking about or do so in hushed tones, but Alisah maturely and boldly shared her heartfelt take on the topic. The little girl’s essay talks about how parents should explain the concept of adoption to their children. She says children deserve to be accepted socially and loved equally. “I believe that you should adopt a child from the orphanage since you will have happiness in your family. After all, the child has the right to live.”

It is also Alisah’s way of thanking Sushmita for saving her. She said, “When you adopt, you give life to someone. You get to be different. Honestly, it’s a beautiful feeling to know that you gave life in such a way that you saved one.” Alisah told her mom that she wrote it sincerely and it is the reflection of her past and present.

Sushmita adopted her first daughter Renee when she was 24, and Alisah when she was 35. It has been a tough time fighting to adopt Alisah, which took nearly 10 years due to its mandate of adopting a son after taking in a daughter.

In one of her interviews, Sushmita narrated how she explained adoption to Renee and came up with the phrase “birth from the heart”. She said, “In the natural birth, the mother and the child connect through the umbilical cord but in adoption, the mother and the child are connected by this higher power, a connection that you cannot cut off. I have had the privilege of experiencing it twice. To become a mother who has given birth from the heart. I have not missed a day of feeling the joy of motherhood.”

In another interview with INS, the proud mom clarified that adoption is not “an act of charity.” Instead, for her, it was the wisest decision she ever made for she was able to protect herself and it stabilized her life.
