  • One of the most challenging things about being a parent in the digital age is keeping your kids safe online.

Moms from our online communities often share that one of their greatest fears is that their children would fall victim to an online predator.

That's why most of them do not allow their children to use gadgets and go online without supervision.

Parents also turn to the security features of mobile applications to keep their children safe.

TikTok, earlier this year, released a new feature called Family Pairing. It lets parents like you link your TikTok account to your teen's to enable a variety of content and privacy settings.

"We've now expanded this feature to give parents greater oversight and families a more robust set of tools to create the TikTok experience that's right for them," it says on their website.

TikTok's Family Pairing comes with these controls:

    Screen Time Management

This allows you to monitor and limit how much time your teen spends on TikTok each day.

    Restricted Mode

This makes it easier for you to limit the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for your teen

    Direct Message

This allows you to restrict who can send messages to your teen. You can also turn direct messaging off completely, depending on your agreement with your child.

However, if your child is below 16 years old, direct messaging is automatically disabled—only approved followers can message each other. Images and videos cannot be sent in messages as well.

    Search

This allows you to decide whether or not your can search for content, users, hashtags, or sounds within the app.

If your teenager likes creating content on TikTok, these Family Pairing controls will come in handy:

    Comments

This allows you to decide who can leave a comment on your teen's videos—everyone? Friends? No one?

    Discoverability

This allows you to decide whether your teen's account is private or public. If you set your teen's account to private, you and your teen get to decide who can see their content.

If you set it to public, anyone can search and view your child's content.

If you constantly worry about your teenagers' activities on TikTok, it's best to have a conversation with them about turning on the app's Family Pairing feature.

Apart from that, it's also important to teach your kids how to identify potential threats online so they know when to stay away and who to stay away from.
