2. DC and Mattell to create superhero action figures and comics for girls
Toy manufacturer Mattell and comic-book publisher DC Comics has teamed up to create teen versions of female superheroes, and bring them to comic books, action figures, LEGO building sets, TV specials, digital content, and clothing lines geared for children ages six to 12. The partnership has already created concepts for characters Batgirl, Supergirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Wonder Woman. The initiative is part of an ongoing effort by DC and rival Marvel to reach out to other demographics and avoid accusations of sexism. (time.com)

4. Removal of ovaries of breast cancer patients could save lives
A new study published in the journal JAMA Oncology found that there are potential health benefits from removing ovaries —- a procedure called oophorectomy —- of women with both breast cancer and the BRCA1 mutation (the kind actress Angelina Jolie has). Women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations have up to 70% risk of getting breast cancer. The researchers recommend that the procedure be performed in the first year after diagnosis to maximize the benefit. (time.com)
