5. Deliveries not to blame for newborn brain damage
A new report published in the Journal of Perinatology found that full-term infants who developed severe cerebral palsy and mental retardation may have had an underlying condition that led to their neurological condition--and not because of delivery or birth. Of the infants included in the small study, more than half had had an infection called chorioamnionitis and another half had severe anemia. Chorioamnionitis attacks the amniotic fluid and membranes that surround the baby in utero, while anemia results from low blood levels following birth. The study calls for more scrutiny during the first two hours after birth to determine possible causes of preventable neurological conditions. (yahoo.com)
