Back in 2021, Vanessa Hudgens expressed her desire to make a movie about her Filipina mother Gina Guangco, who left the Philippines at age 25 for the United States.
Vanessa said of her mom in an interview with Glamour UK, “She’s the strongest woman I know. To come out to the United States with my father, not know a soul here, and to build a new life or herself, it’s terrifying and it takes great courage.
"To see her now as an adult, and to be able to admire her, her journey, and the light and the spirit that she brings to every place that she goes is just contagious."
The actress, who's best known for playing the female lead in the hit 2006 Disney flick, High School Musical, added, "They always say you turn into your parents and the older that I get, the more that I see my mother and myself. In the beginning, it was a little alarming, but now I embrace it with open arms because she's incredible and I aspire to be like her.
Fast-forward to 2023: Vanessa moves closer to her making dream movie come true. For now, though, it's going to be a travel documentary exploring her Filipino heritage. What makes this more special is having her mom Gina and sister Stella in the project.
Vanessa, Gina, and Stella, are set to visit the Philippines in late March 2023. Their itinerary include the capital city of Manila and the coastal province of Palawan.
The travel docu, according to media reports, will capture Vanessa's first trip to the country of her mother’s birth, as well as showcase her close relationship with her family and her own journey as one of the successful Filipino-Americans in Hollywood. It will be produced and directed by Paul Soriano.
“I feel like ours is such a relatable story to so many women all over the world,” Vanessa says. “The more that we can share, the more we can lift each other up.”
