According to a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, kids who watch violent TV shows throughout the day or watch TV before bedtime are more likely to develop sleep problems.
Researchers found out that among 600 preschool-age kids (3 to 5 years old), those who could watch violent TV programs (children’s programs with violent scenes) during the day had more sleep problems, and those kids on the other hand who watched TV after 7 pm (before bedtime) also found it hard to sleep, whether the TV shows had violent scenes or not.
Kids who had television sets in their own rooms and those who watched for longer hours were also more prone to sleeping difficulties.
With these findings, along with many other studies on the negative effects of excessive and negative television content on children, the researchers are urging parents to moderate and monitor their children’s TV time. They should control which programs their kids watch and take note of the age-appropriateness of the programs.
