  • Jolina Magdangal shared the first photo of her second child, a daughter named Vika Anaya, on Instagram just a few minutes ago. Although the photo showed only the newborn's adorably pink lips, the most prominently displayed was a butterfly clip on the baby's sleeve. In the 90's, Jolina was popular for always wearing butterfly hair clips.

Jolina was scheduled for a Caesarean Section today, May 28 at 9 a.m. Husband Mark Escueta shared a photo that showed them in surgical caps and scrubs.

"Andito na siya! Maraming salamat sa lahat ng dasal. Ang sakit ng tahi pero pipilitin ko kayanin. Sobrang worth it ang lahat ng sakit dahil sa nakita kong reaction ni Pele kay Vika. Will post pictures very very soon," the new mom of two wrote on Instagram.

Around 1:58 p.m., the official Facebook page of Magandang Buhay, where Jolina is a co-host alongside Karla Estrada and Melai Cantiveros-Francisco, posted a photo announcing Baby Vika's birth. "Jolina is still at the recovery room with Mark by her side. Mark will post details as soon as they are out," the text on the photo showed. It was a statement from Jun Magdangal, Jolina's father.

On his Instagram, Mark shared that their firstborn, Pele, was also birthed through CS, but says, “kahit second timena, natatakot pa rin.” His wife echoed his sentiments, posting on her own account that she was glad that her son, Pele, slept beside her Sunday night (a day before her operation) because “mas napanatag ang loob ko,” she writes. She also promised Pele that she’ll try to recover quickly so she can take care of her son and they can enjoy playing with his new sister together.

It wasn’t an easy pregnancy for Jolina. In an interview with SmartParenting.com.ph, she said that although she had been preparing for a second baby since the first quarter of 2017, she only got pregnant in September of the same year. Unlike her first pregnancy, she experienced on-and-off spotting, morning sickness, vomiting and acid reflux.

“Sabi nga nila, iba ang aura ko ngayon, pero mas nahihirapan ako,” she says. “Konting kibot, kailangan nakaupo ako kasi parang nasusuka ako. Alam mo ’yong feeling na parang nawawalan ako ng oxygen? ’Tapos ’yong hilo ko pa, parang namamanhid ’yong legs. Kaya medyo nakahiga lang. Pag walang ginagawa, higa lang.”

The actress also developed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)Last March, Jolina Magdangal walked her followers through two necessary prenatal tests, one of which was the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

In an article on SmartParenting.com.ph, GDM is defined as a condition where a mom-to-be who didn't have diabetes before getting pregnant develops elevated blood sugar levels during her pregnancy. It may start to show at the 28th week of pregnancy.

Early in May, Mark posted on his Instagram that Jolina had developed the condition in her last trimester, but that “everything is on track and under control,” as they were undergoing ultrasound scans each week.

But in her last ultrasound before giving birth, Jolina shared that Vika’s weight was a little over the recommended range. “Hirap din ng may gestational diabetes, kahit kontrolado mo na ang pagkain, ‘di mo pa rin masabi ‘yung effect sa baby. Medyo nababahala ako,” the singer-actress posted on Instagram on May 25.

Despite all these, Jolina continued to be strong for her baby. Mark even praised his wife for making her pregnancy look easy. “Takot siya sa injection pero ngayon kayang-kaya niya gawin sa sarili niya, kasabay ng malaking adjustment sa pagkain,” he writes on his Instagram. “Frustrating para sa akin kasi kung pwede sana ako na lang ang mahirapan.” But he says he is praying that his wife’s gestational diabetes would disappear after pregnancy. Jolina had to have a Caesarian-section for baby Vika, not because of GDM, but because she has a very narrow pelvis, which puts a normal delivery out of the question. Pele, for instance, only weighed 6.5 lbs at birth “pero 'di nagkasya,” so she had a C-section delivery had to be performed.

Because of the surgery, Mark knows she needs time to recover. So he already made a promise to take care of her and their daughter. “Kami muna ni Pele [ang] bahala mag-alaga sa inyo ni Vika,” he says.

    Congratulations again, Jolina and Mark!
