Breastfeeding in public is not a very common sight in urban areas. Breastfeeding that of a stranger’s – a homeless woman – is simply unheard of.
Facebook user Arjel’s Shoppee Rtw — Gina Borbor in real life — posted how she witnessed a woman come to the rescue of a hungry baby outside a shopping mall in southern Butuan City. The baby belonged to a homeless woman who appeared to be unsuccessful in breastfeeding the baby herself.
Sobra na talaga 'yung iyak niya,” Gina, 34, wrote in a Facebook post on June 21.
Her post has since been liked and hearted 71,000 times and shared 32,000 times.
Gina, a mother of a three-year old baby girl, was outside the shopping mall waiting for some people when she saw the mother and child.
She mused that she would have breastfed the baby herself if only she could “kahit nasa public pa tayo.”
Fortunately, another woman’s maternal instinct kicked in.

Addressing the woman in the white shirt who breastfed the baby, Gina said, “Kung sino ka man talaga ate I #SALUTE you talaga.”
Speaking with SmartParenting.com.ph, Gina said she hasn’t seen the mother and child since that day. There is unconfirmed information though that other women have stepped up to breastfeed the baby as well. She’s also heard that the baby has fever and is in the care of social workers but she is unsure if the reports are true.
Asked if, in that moment, mother’s instinct kicked in, she said yes, “hindi mapigilan.”
