Pregnancy keepsakes are special. They provide women with a way to eternally remember and cherish that precious moment in their lives when they nurtured and carried a human being in their bodies. That’s why we keep ultrasound pictures, pregnancy journals, baby bump photos and baby’s feet or hand castings.

With a recent development however, brought about by ever-advancing technology, human beings may have taken pregnancy keepsakes to a whole new level. And, we’re not entirely sure we’re comfortable with it.

A British company called Baby: Boo is offering to make 3D castings of your unborn baby’s face. That’s right, your baby’s face in 3D reproduction, in a nice pink skin-like color, in a frame. Would you be up for it?

The company uses ultrasound data to get a rendering of the baby’s face, converts it into a 360-degree image file and prints it in 3D. For £149 (P10,315) you can get a lifelike version of your soon-to-come baby’s face in a nice gold frame. Add a little more and they’ll mount it on a glass stand.

“People do think it’s a little odd, but it’s similar to creating casts of baby’s feet or hands,” Baby:Boo owner Katie Kermode told the Mirror. “It’s actually a really lovely keepsake to cherish.”

Katie Kermode suffered two miscarriages before finally giving birth to two children with the help of fertility treatments. The 3D figurines of her children helped her cope with the nervous anticipation of pregnancy, she said.

Aside from being keepsakes, Kermode’s unique service can also help in seemingly unexpected ways. In a project sponsored by Huggies, a 3D baby model of a blind woman’s baby helped her “see” her child.

“The 3D figurines are a really unique way to share the excitement of your new baby with family and friends - there will be no need to look at scan pictures anymore, they can almost see the real thing,” said Kermode.

Maybe they aren’t so creepy after all.
