Husband-and-wife tandem Zach and Aila Yonzon are foodies. They’ve always shared a fondness for delicious food, and would go out to explore new places in search for food haunts that would combine the three things they were looking for: good food, great coffee, and a nice place where people like them would want to hang out at. Alas, it wasn’t easy to find.

Dining out – sometimes twice a day – was a reprieve for the couple, who in 2010 started a cake business called the Bunny Baker which was run by two people (them) and operated at home (theirs). “When we made our very first cake topper -- a fat bunny – and posted it on Facebook, orders started to come in, sometimes for a baby shower, or birthdays. Apparently, designer cakes were becoming popular, and we just lucked out, us being at the right place at the right time. We were able to grow the business quickly through Facebook,” says Zach, who eventually had to quit his day job to go full-time on their baking business.

“There came a point where we would be awake for 72 hours straight just to keep up with the orders, and since we didn’t have a driver then, I’d deliver the cakes to the customers myself,” he adds. All this, while building a family (they have three young kids).

Eventually, when people got wind of their fantastic cake creations, people would ask where they could find their shop. “Prospective customers wanted to see the cakes we do, plus, in 2014, even though business had been great, it was hard to rely purely on Facebook,” thus, the couple started dreaming bigger. A café and cake studio would legitimize the business, give them the venue to showcase their edible masterpieces, and finally end their search for a nice place that served good food and great coffee. If they couldn’t find it, they would build it.

Thus, almost a year later, Zach and Aila opened The Bunny Baker Café and Cake Studio, a place that fulfills everything they’ve been wanting, and more. “We didn’t want it to be just a cake gallery -- we wanted good food, good coffee, cupcakes (which are samplers of our cakes). Everything you’ll find in our menu are our personal favorites.” They also serve delicious gelato, which they make themselves, from scratch.

“We wanted a place where people would stay and hang out, have meetings, study. Thus, we have longer store hours [than most cafés], free Wi-fi, power outlets everywhere, and counters for people who want to study.”

“We wanted a café component where you can come in and enjoy our cakes,” says Zach, and by that he means either trying them out or watch as they are made. A sculpting area allows customers to see cake designers in action from the dining area, crafting the toppers or putting together a cake. “It’s always a treat for our young customers. You can’t put a price on the faces of the kids who come here.”

The Bunny Baker Cafe & Cake Studio is located at Unit 301, 3rd Floor, Hemady Square, Doña Hemady cor. E. Rodriguez Sr., Quezon City, Philippines. Store hours are from 7 am to 12 midnight daily. For inquiries, call them at 650-4153.
