I’ll never forget our trip to Texas last March 2009. Red, my husband, decided to bring me and our daughter Raesee along to his manager’s training in a hotel in Dallas, Texas. Though he could have traveled by plane, he chose to drive eight hours to Texas just so we could bond.

Well, nothing really exciting happened during the trip. Actually, the best part was the long drive. We drove back for what felt like 20 hours rather than eight. Whenever we’d get bored, Red would switch on the CD player, which meant listening to Metallica. Raesee loves that band as much as her dad. But then Raesee started to get so antsy that at one point, she vomited in the car! As she calmed down, she asked for her blanket, which, of course, was the same blanket that I wiped her vomit with! I couldn’t give it to her, which meant another two hours of torture.

Still, vomit and all, it was a trip worth looking back to. The road trip was hilarious! We saw horses, pigs, cows, a flock of birds, a swan—it was simply amazing! You see, every time we go on a road trip, we point out the animals to Raesee. And Red would try to keep things amusing by making up funny stuff like, “Look, it’s a camel with a short neck” while pointing to a horse. Or he’ll say, “That’s a pig that can fly” while pointing to an eagle, and so on. So, according to him, we saw dinosaurs.

More than anything, it was sweet that my husband opted for a long drive with us than go for a laidback flight that only takes 20 minutes.
