Kids Prefer Family Vacations Over Toys, Survey ShowsNew experiences and memories rank high on what kids really want from a family vacation, results reveal.
There are a lot of really good reasons to pack your bags and go on a family vacation. Holidays away are valued by every family member—they even serve as “happiness anchors” for children until they grow up.
But, what's a perfect vacation like for a kid? A survey conducted by YouGov, in partnership with HomeAway and FamilyFun magazine, wanted to find out. Calling it the 2017 Kidpinion Travel Survey, they asked more than 500 kids ages 6 to 18 and their parents about their vacation preferences. Based on the results, this is what the little ones feel and think about family vacations:

1. Kids want to receive a family vacation as a gift
When it comes to birthday gifts, 43% of kids said they would prefer to go on vacation with their family than receive a physical gift, like a toy. “Young people value experiences over ‘stuff,’ said Melanie Fish, HomeAway’s family travel expert. Plus, there’s good news too for kids who do get family trips away as gifts—nearly 90% of parents surveyed said that their kids are involved and their opinions are considered when planning a vacation.
Here’s a perfect example: a Smart Parenting mom said she found that a family vacation to Hong Kong Disneyland was a good alternative to a 7th birthday party for her child. “Halos same din ang magagastos or baka less pa.” Read more about it here.
2. Kids think new experiences are the best part of a vacation
So, why do kids love going on vacation? The same reason a lot of adults do—to have an adventure. According to the survey, 46% of kids said seeing a new place or trying new things is their favorite part of vacationing.
Not only that; parents and kids may have the same end-goal in mind when on a family trip, whether both parties realize it or not. “We found making memories is just as important to [the children] as it is to their parents,” said Fish. And what better way to make memories than to try something new!ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWCONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos

3. A pool is a must for both adults and kids
Though a vacation definitely doesn’t have to be fancy, a pool is a kid’s top must-have when on a family trip, with 36% ranking it as the most important vacation amenity. Same goes for mom and dad, with 77% saying that a pool is important to them. Kids also prefer staying in a rental home when on vacation the most. If you're looking for houses that fulfil both of these, there are a few in our list of Batangas homes you can rent via Airbnb.
4. If you can, invite more people along
The more, the merrier! Out of all the kid participants, nearly one-third would include their cousins, pet, or grandparents to their ideal family vacation. A little over half would also like to invite friends. “I'd rather go on vacation with my cousins than have a birthday party,” says one of the boys in a video interview for the Kidpinions report. One of the girls said she would even invite her second cousins.
