Plan That Road Trip! Baguio's Kennon Road Is Now Open to Traffic on Weekends

Can you really say you've been to Baguio if you've never dropped by the huge lion head perched along Kennon Road? A picture underneath the garish yellow-and-brown statue was mandatory for any family making their way to the Philippines' summer capital — that is, until the road was pretty much closed off in the latter half of the 2010s.

In case you're heading up north soon, though, here's your chance to recreate those family pics. The Kennon Road is now open to vehicles heading up to Baguio every weekend, from 6 a.m. on Fridays to 6 p.m. on Mondays, starting January 10.

This setup will last only "until further notice," according to the Cordillera segment of the Department of Public Works and Highways, so you may want to block off a weekend soon. Only vehicles heading up to Baguio City will be allowed on Kennon Road — but that definitely doesn't mean you can take up all the lanes. Stay to the right and take note of the 20 km/h speed limit, reminded the department.

The thoroughfare has been accessible on and off since an earthquake in 1990, with the government opening it up to traffic only when necessary (i.e., holidays). No news yet on when repair and safety work on Kennon Road will be completed, but until then, we're all better safe than sorry.
