  • The recent Holy Week was a chance for families to spend time together for an extended period. For many working parents, it's the only long break they get. So many take advantage by getting out of the city and unwind in different spots outside of Manila. The only problem: The amount of trash left behind by vacationers in various destinations was alarming.

A Facebook user named Joemarie Legarda Gonzales shared some photos of Twin Lakes, Tagaytay, where discarded trash on the sidewalks ruined the beautiful view.

Part of her caption read, “Maraming turista, maraming basura. Gustong-gusto nating mga Pinoy na nakakakita ng magandang view, mahilig tayo sa mga ‘Instagram-able’ ika nga. Pero tignan ninyo yung pictures, sa baba 'nice view' sa Twin Lakes, pero sa harapan puro basura. Maging responsable sana tayong turista…Mano bang magdala ng plastic o sako lagayan ng basura. Kung ‘di mo kayang linisin ‘yung kalat ng iba, ‘wag ka na lang maging kabilang nila, ‘di ba?”

Another user named Mark Roa shared his frustration at the garbage left by the influx of tourists in Siargao Island. He says, “To those irresponsible travelers who leave their trash in this island paradise, SHAME ON YOU! Is it really hard to dispose [of] your garbage properly? Start with yourself and influence your mates, too.”

Not only should we learn how to dispose of trash correctly, but we should also be mindful of the waste we produce. How can we reduce the garbage in our lives?

We say start small by refusing to use a plastic straw. According to the 2017 International Coastal Cleanup Report of the Ocean Conservancy group, straws and stirrers are among the top 10 items collected by their volunteers in beach cleanups all over the world. It poses a real danger to animals like sea turtles, albatross, and fish who can eat them, according to the Ocean Conservancy website.

Recently, fast food chain McDonald’s announced it would phase out plastic straws from 1,300 branches in the United Kingdom and begin a trial of paper straws in some locations. The company also said it will begin keeping straws behind the counter and require customers to ask for them. (In the Philippines, some McDonald’s branches, along with other fast food restaurants, have already implemented “strawless days.”)

If you love your straws, we recommend switching to metal straws that you can bring anywhere. Choose those that are made with food-grade stainless steel — these are reusable, will not affect the taste or flavor of your drinks, and are BPA-free (Bisphenol A is a common industrial chemical used in plastics).

Ready to make the switch? Here’s where you can buy them:
