A virtual tour is the next best thing to a trip while on quarantineby Lei Dimarucut-Sison .

We are living in extraordinary times, in ways we probably never imagined possible. Because of COVID-19, we are all on community quarantine, with nothing much to do at home.
For us in Luzon, Philippines, it has been two weeks since we've had to forego going to work or school. As we welcome the month of April (and the summer season) it has surely crossed our minds that under ordinary circumstances, we would be at the beach by now or planning a trip soon — but of course, given the situation, all of that will have to wait.
We may be limited now by travel restrictions, but it doesn't mean we can't visit beautiful destinations around the world. Aided by our trusty laptop and hopefully an equally reliable internet connection, we can still travel and take a virtual tour of some of the most famous tourist spots abroad — and feel like you're actually there — with the help of Google Arts & Culture Street View. Ready to go?

1. The Eiffel Tower, France
PHOTO BY Stephen Leonardi/UnsplashCONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended VideosThe Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most iconic places on Earth. Who hasn't dreamt of visiting this romantic place, go on a picnic by the grounds and have your photo taken with the famous tower in the background? Probably no one! The virtual tour, however, places you inside the tower, so you won't see it as you normally would in photos. Instead, it allows you to enjoy an unobstructed view of the River Seine and the structures around Paris from the second or third level, or level 3.5 of this humongous wrought iron tower, and it's just as magical. Take a tour of the Eiffel Tower now!

The fifth largest Christian church in the world stands mighty and proud in the heart of Milan, Italy for 634 years now -- and they're not quite done yet. Yes, the Duomo di Milano is still a work in progress! Occupying an rea of one hectare and with a capacity of up to 40,000 people, it is surely one of the places you must visit in Italy (albeit virtually). Take a tour of the Milan Cathedral now!

PHOTO BY Meric Dagli/UnsplashDid you know that this majestic structure in Agra, India is actually a mosque and a mausoleum in one? It houses the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, and it is also where he was laid to rest eventually. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and took 20 years to finish. For its beauty and the story behind it, it truly deserves to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a tour of the Taj Mahal now!

PHOTO BY Raul Varela/UnsplashIt's probably not in your bucket list of places to visit, but Machu Picchu in the Andes Mountains in Peru is an important place to visit if you like stories about ancient civilizations. The Inca civilization built this sprawling citadel in the 1400s to the early 1500s and later abandoned it. One other reason you might prefer a virtual tour instead of waiting for travel bans to be lifted is this: Walking the 42-kilometer trail will require you to walk five to 7 hours a day on challenging terrain for about three to four days in a row, before you reach the ancient ruins. Take a tour of Machu Picchu now!
