SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME
« Reply #15 on: September 08, 2008, 12:20:40 pm »

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

A lack of answers is part of what makes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) so frightening. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants who are 1 month to 1 year old, and claims the lives of about 2,500 infants each year in the United States. It remains unpredictable despite years of research. Even so, you can take steps to help reduce the risk of SIDS in your infant. First and foremost, put your infant to sleep on his or her back if the baby is younger than 1 year old.
Searching for Answers

As the name implies, SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant who is younger than 1 year old. It is a frightening prospect because it can strike without warning, usually in a seemingly healthy infant. Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep (hence the common reference to "crib death"), and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering.

While most conditions or diseases usually are diagnosed by the presence of specific symptoms, most SIDS diagnoses come only after all other possible causes of death have been ruled out through a review of the infant's medical history and environment. This review helps distinguish true SIDS deaths from those resulting from accidents, abuse, and previously undiagnosed conditions, such as cardiac or metabolic disorders.

When considering which babies could be most at risk, no single risk factor is likely to be sufficient to cause a SIDS death. Rather, several risk factors combined may contribute to cause an at-risk infant to die of SIDS.

Most deaths due to SIDS occur between 2 and 4 months of age, and incidence increases during cold weather. African-American infants are twice as likely and Native American infants are about three times more likely to die of SIDS than caucasian infants. More boys than girls fall victim to SIDS.

Other potential risk factors include:

    * smoking, drinking, or drug use during pregnancy
    * poor prenatal care
    * prematurity or low birth-weight
    * mothers younger than 20
    * smoke exposure following birth
    * overheating from excessive sleepwear and bedding
    * stomach sleeping

Iv experienced it..Scary sobra. Most pedia doesnt advice na hayaan nkadapa ang infant matulog. Kasi nccompress yung chest nila lumiliit yung air passage. So ang tendency when the brain send message to do respiratory system not to breath suddenly titigil sila huminga.
Thank God shes fine..

sudden infant death syndrome. sa pagkakaalam and intindi ko, don't let your baby "esp newborn" to sleep na naka-dapa. since hindi pa nila kaya yung weight nila, pag nakadapa sila matulog mahihirapan sila huminga.

anyway, try reading this for complete and accurate info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudden_infant_death_syndrome

SIDS - sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib death, causes the death of infants from 1 month to 4 months of age.

SIDS is the sudden, quiet death of an infant who has otherwise been basically well. most of the babies die at home while they are asleep. the death may be due to an abnormality in the baby's respiratory or cardiac system or some deviation in his immune system.

the american academy of pediatrics recommends that healthy baby infants sleep on their back or sides and not on their stomach.  extensive research reviewed by an academy task force shows a strong association between infants sleeping on their stomach and SIDS.

hello sis

my son is only 4m, 3w. hubby and i are afraid with our baby's sleeping position. minsan kasi nagigising kami sa madaling-araw na nakadapa si baby. e hindi pa naman n'ya masyado gamay ang pagpaling ng ulo habang nakadapa. kaya pag nakikita namin s'yang nakadapa nang tulog, yung mukha n'ya e subsob sa higaan n'ya. we tried putting a small sized adult pillow beside him, but to no avail. sa likot n'ya matulog, lumalayo sa kanya yung mga unan na katabi n'ya.
na experience n'yo ba ito when your kid was in this age? what can we do to prevent him from rolling-over while sleeping?

hi mga sis, im a newbie here..in regards with sa pagdapa ni babies magsleep our Pedia highly recommended on this. Sabi niya it is far more better na sleep si baby ng nakadapa, benfefits are 1. iwas colic, 2. mas nakakahinga ng maluwag ( lalo na kapag may sipon si baby mas okay sa NASAL pasagge 3. mas mahimbing ang tulog. I always try it on my baby and okay naman. kasi when babies wake up nang nakadapa they will really move thier heads and pag naasar na will cry naman that you will be able to wake up and be with them. Even on th books that i have read, they strongly recko babies to sleep on thier backs thank sides :)

I placed two mini bolster beside him, so if tumatagilid na siya when nakapa niya pillow dumadantay nlang siya dun.  That prevents him dumapa totally.
