Title: touch therapy / infant massage
Post by: zia01 on July 08, 2008, 09:12:59 pm
Hi mommies! I was reading an article about touch therapy and it said: "studies show that touch therapy, including massage, contributes to a healthy weight gain, enhanced growth and social development in infants." Kahit wala pa akong baby, I believe na important ito not just for babies but for everyone.

Share naman po kayo ng experiences ninyo on touch therapy. Also, how do you massage your babies?

Hi zia! Madami talagang benefits ang touch therapy like making your baby's bones strong and boosts the immune system.
Ako after taking a bath, I apply lotion on my baby's limbs and massage it lightly.

yes mommynako, even for toddlers pwedeng-pwede pa rin ang touch therapy. Kahit gaano pa tayo katanda, we still need that. Sabi nga nila touch is the language of love. I just read nga na additional benefit ng touch therapy is it boosts self-confidence.

Mommies, kasama sa touch therapy ang carrying baby whenever he/she cries. Naniniwala ba kayo na nakaka-spoil if everytime baby cries eh binubuhat natin sya?

i don't think nakaka-spoil yun. they cry because they feel something, maybe hungry, wet,or may pain.so dapat we check on them....touching is a loving way to bond with our babies.when we touch them, they become confident & well-adjusted.

My approach to this is putting baby oil on my 4-month-old infant after baths. Doing an infant massage which I learned from babycenter.com and letting him have a skin-to-skin contact with me whenever possible (infants feels secured with this based on a clinical study accrdg. to a baby magazine).

Thanks martedi for your reply regarding carrying baby whenever he/she cries. I would like to get more personal experiences pa sana regarding this. :)

Kanina, I was reading a magazine that featured massaging techniques on babies. I would like to share them with you although perhaps some of you are already doing this na.

Gently massage baby's forehead with circular strokes. Continue over temples, hinges of the jaw, behind the ears, and the rest of the scalp.

sobrang agree ako dito kasi si iyah hindi masyado iyakin kasi buhat ko palagi.. :)and touch therapy talaga after bath and before sleeping at night para ma feel ni iya that i love her so much..siguro eto isang reason bakit sobrang habol sa akin ang baby ko.. ;)

Hi mommies! In my case, as much as I wanted to carry him often, I just can't coz CS ako, a hands-on mom with no helper or yaya sa bahay. I do household errands alone kaya to fill this gap I do massage, and alot of bed sharing. He seems ok with it. Kaya lang pag nasa in-laws ko (his the 1st apo and lately weekly na hinihiram) nahihirapan ako kasi just after a day of staying with them pakarga na palagi, umiiyak pag hindi masyado matagal hindi buhat. Saka lang ulit masasanay sa usual routine namin after a day or two.  :( But I understand my in-laws bakit masyado nila pampered.

Natuwa naman ako pwede pala facial massage in a mild stoke. Sa tummy area and chest lang kasi yung nabasa ko.  :) I love this site now.  ;)

Hi sis. Don't fret. Sabi nga, it's the quality not the quantity. I understand na mahirap nga ang sked mo, biruin mo mondays to saturdays. What do you do on sundays? Baka pwedeng yung half-day ng Sunday devoted to tenshi. Besides, touch therapy is not just massage...Just the simple act na haplos mo si baby is already a bonding moment for the two of you. :)

hi sis zia, on sundays, well i make sure to it na mas marami time ko for tenshi although sometimes there are some errands that makes me not to play with him... well, paguwi ko naman kapag di pa sya tulog e nilalaro ko naman sya kahit 15 min lang. kasi ako pa ang mag cook ng dinner namin eh... hehe!!!

yes, i do that too  ;) ... i also want to share one of the massages i do with my baby...i trace a smile on his upper lip, then the lower lip. i've read that this could relax the muscles of the baby; since they are always crying & sucking.

Hi tenshimom...Hirap maging working mom noh? But am sure na isang smile lang ni handsome baby tenshi eh wala na ang pagod mo. Am yet to experience the wonders of motherhood since di pa kami nagkaka-baby ni hubby.

How do you massage your baby's back? this is how my sisted does it: from the top of baby's back down to the buttocks, move hands in a crisscross pattern back and forth.

i massage my baby's back similar to that...on his back,i move my hands back & forth in opposite directions, going down his buttocks.then,go up to his shoulders & down again.

Mommies, ano'ng magandang massage technique for the arms and legs?

Share ko rin lang a touching story from my sister regarding her kids. She always massages her kids after bath and before bedtime. One night after coming home from work, nasabi niya na ang sakit ng mga binti niya. Nagmadali daw na lumapit kids (2 and 3 yrs. old) niya sa kanya tapos inaabot yung binti niya. They wanted to massage it! Naiyak daw sya sa tuwa.

for the arms & legs, i do the "milking" technique...i've read that this massage could promote flexibility. i tried it on my son, and until now,i still do that. using both hands, one after the other, you stroke the arms as if milking a cow, then do the same with the legs...you could also massage the hands & soles with your thumb, then gently pull the fingers / toes...

Mga sis, how often do you massage your babies?

mommy martedi, thanks for the tip about massaging arms and legs. Unfortunately, malakas kiliti ng baby ko sa legs. Kaya konting pisil-pisil at haplos lang. Pero sa arms, gustong-gusto niya yung milking technique. Thanks!

you know what mommy, with my eldest ako den lahat.  although i've stopped working pero being a "domestic goddess" (a.k.a housewife) mas exhausting.  i don't have a yaya or maid, kaya all household chores ako & no helper with taking care of my baby so what i did since i'm too tired to massage her na talaga i lie down on my back, pull up my shirt, then i lay her down on her stomach to my tummy while she sleeps.  minsan i remove her shirt para tummy to tummy kami so may skin contact, i just cover her back with her shirt & the fan is facing the ceiling and i just let her sleep while i take also a power nap. kahit 15minutes lang ako makatulog ok na, then i put her down na sa bed so she could continue sleeping.  kaya up until she was three she prefers sleeping tummy to tummy kami :), now that she's almost 5, she can't sleep naman without me hugging her :)

Hi mga sis. Before, I was having a hard time in putting my baby to sleep. Tapos, madalas pa syang gumising sa gabi. Good thing that when i was looking for resources sa Internet, nakita ko ang website na ito: http://www.babycentre.co.uk/advertorials/asean/sleepcenter_ph/
After I answered the questions, a customised sleep profile for my baby was given. I printed this out and discussed it with my pedia. One of the advices there was to massage my baby every night. Ngayon kampante na ako that my baby is getting the right amount and quality of sleep.  :)

additional massage technique for baby's arms & legs would be the squeeze & twist. hold baby's arm with your hands,as if you were holding a baseball bat, then squeeze & twist his arm gently. then do the same with baby's leg -from hip to foot.

Touch Therapy plays a significant role in promoting the proper growth and healthy development of infants. Physically, massage stimulates the nerves, increases blood flow and strengthens the immune system. It can relieve conditions such as colic and constipation.

The values of touch therapy do not only address and develop the physical development of the babies because the parent-child bonding also springs from the nurturing touch between a mother and a baby.

Benefits of Touch Therapy

• Stimulates baby’s circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems
• Improves mobility, makes muscles more supple
• Relaxes baby
• Helps baby grow
• A bonding tool between baby and mother as well as with other family members.
• Aids in the secretion of prolactin –also known as the “mothering hormone”, which assists in milk production
• Helps build a stronger immune system

Massaging your baby is a beautiful and Loving way to begin a lifelong relationship

Importance of Lifelong Massage

Infant massage is a bonding activity between parents and their children. In the most basic terms, infant or pediatric massage refers to the process of stroking the muscles of an infant using a variety of specialized massage techniques. Vocalization, eye-to-eye contact, and other positive behavioral reinforcements are also important components of the massage.
Infant massage is being embraced by a wide variety of professionals who are incorporating it into their practices to help families cope with children with special needs as well as healthy full term newborns. Techniques are simple and effective and are most likely performed by parents and primary caregivers who have been taught by certified infant massage instructors. The approach is empowering and improves the parent-infant attachment process. There is a growing body of research that supports the therapeutic benefits.

New SP article on touch therapy: Touch Therapy : My Journey with Reiki

Reiki is an ancient Japanese form of touch therapy.  It is made up of 2 words: “Rei” which means “Universal or Higher Power”, and “Ki” which means “life force”.  Reiki practitioners are able to tap into and channel this universal live force or energy to promote healing and comfort not only for themselves but to others.

A recent study shows that babies who had blood drawn at the hospital felt soothed when held by their mother or father.
Premature babies, in particular, are especially weaker compared to full-term babies, but a method known as “Kangaroo Care” has been proven to promote health benefits such as more regulated heartbeat, breathing, temperature and pain management. In Kangaroo Care, an infant, wearing only a diaper, is held against the bare chest or skin of the parent, with a cloth or towel wrapped around both parent and baby.

It completely makes sense that touch has positive effects. I love giving my child a bath (well not so much now because he's older) but it was a special time for me because of the contact. :) It would calm me down.

Cathleen precious, you may check the johnsons baby website. I got the massage techniques there. I massage my daughter everyday after her morning bath, pag pa-nap na sya and after I brish her hair. It's our intimate moment, I always look forward to this everyday.
