Title: lasik surgery-kamusta naman po?
Post by: anerba :) on June 22, 2010, 06:30:53 pm
Thank you and God bless you  ;)

hi sis! thanks for starting this topic... i hope may magpost na naka experience na nito.
I am also contemplating on getting one. I have been wearing glasses since grade 4, but I started using contact lenses when I was in 3rd year high. At age 28, 550 na ang grade ng mata ko. Hopefully, next year, pag uwi namin, I'll undergo lasik.
I just read in a magazine na ang side effect daw is dry eyes kasi may napuputol na veins. :)

huwat?? 70k na ba siya? last time I saw an ad, P50k pa lang siya, ang bilis tumalon ng price.. pero mas maganda na yun kesa naman forever malabo mata natin.. :) Dream ko talaga one day crystal clear eyesight again and lasik is the only hope I've got.

Wow! Im hoping mas matagal pa naman dyan ang time ko here on earth. Hehe.. Thanks for the info on the price :)

I had laser surgery back in 2002 at UCLA where I was training for it. It was one of the best decisions in my life. I never realized how muchI'd enjoy  freedom from glasses as I wore them since highschool.

Since then, my patients from Fatima and St.Luke's have shared my experience. Basically, the common comment is "why haven't I had this before?"

I just read in a magazine na ang side effect daw is dry eyes kasi may napuputol na veins. :)

Not all patients experience Dry Eye after Lasik.  For those who do, it is mostly transient. Just a few weeks to months. It is very rare that Lasik patients get severe dry eye afterwards IF they are screened properly by a fellowship-trained refractive surgeon. Patients who will potentially develop severe dry eye should not have had Lasik in the first place :) Some other procedure should have been done.

Fortunately we have so many ways to manage dry eye now compared to where we were 10-15 years ago.

Lastly, people who wore glasses before need to understand that they had a "shield" which protected their eyes from wind and drafts before the surgery. Now that their glasses are gone, the "shield effect" is gone as well.

As for costs, at St.Luke's, my patients pay 70K-85K depending on exactly what laser surgery we need to do. At Fatima, my patients pay 54K.

dr. richie, thanks for your reply and the links you have provided. I really am keen on getting a lasik surgery next year when we go home. But I've read from the link that proper screening should be done to know if qualified ako for the surgery. But we will just be staying sa Phils for about a month. would that be enough time para sa screening and the surgery itself? parang may isang item kasi dun na after a few months iche check yung eyes niya then that will be the time na pwede nang masabi na qualified for the lasik surgery. :) TIA

1 Month is a lot of time. For my patients, I suggest that they  have the screening as soon as they arrive. If they're good candidates, then  suggest that they have the surgery done asap so I have more time to take care of them. Naturally, this eats up certain days during the the vacation pero safer naman.

It is very rare that we need to observe the patient for several months before we can determine if a patient is a good candidate or not.

For balikbayans, I give them a clinical abstract so they can follow-up with their eye doctors when they get back home.

Doc, pwede bang give us din discount? hehe...

I'm considering St. Lukes for the procedure, actually number 1 on my list. Hopefully, if plans push thru next year, tutuloy ko na talaga. I'm tired of wearing contact lenses... :(

Thanks po doc! :)

dr. richie, im glad nagcomment kayo sa topic na ito and thank you for the infos.  ang tanong ko lang...forever na kaya malinaw ang eyesight after the surgery? or may  tendency na lumabo ulet? Very hectic ang sched ng hubby ko kaya this coming dec since he's in VL for 3 weeks gusto sana ni hubby magpacheck up agad. pwede po ba mahingi contact numbers nyo para po pag nagpacheck up si hubby? uuwi rin sya sa sept 3 pero 2 days lang. pakisend na lang po sa email anerba050608@yahoo.com

God bless!

@anerba :)

I think "forever" is too long  for anything in this world :) The changes we make in lasik surgery are permanent. Lasik does not prevent you from getting cataracts at 60 y.o or glaucoma or sore eyes at some point in time. So you're eyes can still get blurry for some other reason in the future... notably, old age.

I'll email you in a bit :)

Hi. I'm also considering Lasik since years ago. I wear glasses, I've had contact lens-related infections but sometimes I still use contact lens.

What are the fees for Lasik screening if you are a good candidate?

Ako din po, pa discount if I'm a good candidate for Lasik!  :D maybe when my 13th month pay comes in, I can have the surgery hmm

hello dr.richie, my grade is 450/550, been wearing contact lense for almost 10 years na. One of my fear is to get old na sobrang labo ng eyes and worst fear ko is to get blind  :( Once makaipon lang talagang gusto ko mag undergo nga lasik. Ask ko lang po is there a difference in technology sa St. Lukes at sa Fatima? or the same lang pero St. Lukes kasi is St.Lukes. Pls. email me din po your clinic schedule para I can vist one of this days. Salamat po

Excellent question! The technology is the same. Yet there are subtle differences. They generally don't matter for most eyes but for some, they might. Lastly, warranty by st.luke's is "lifetime". Fatima's is not. email kita.

Dr. Richie, what does lifetime warranty mean? Pag po lumabo ulit mata after the surgery, pwedeng ulitin?

Thanks po!

@liam's mom

Yes. Pero kung lumabo yung mata mo due to some other disease (like age related cataract), then lasik is not the mode of treatment. This is beyond the "warranty parameters"

hi doc,

im wearing contact lens for 10yrs now. my grade is 375 both eyes. my mom has retinitis pigmentosa. is there a possibility magkaron din ako nun? she's almost blind now. sa family kaming 2 brother ko may grado na mata yung 2 mukang 20/20 pa naman sila.

another question, we have a health card from my company, can i charge the operation to my health card? ;D or is there a way na macover operation ng health card? maxado po kasi mahal yung procedure.. :'(

what dou mean po with this: Lastly, warranty by st.luke's is "lifetime".  panu pong lifetime warranty offer ng st lukes?

thanks in advance doc richie. so gald you were there to ans all our questions. ;) God bless! :)

@♥♥♥TWYSHY♥♥♥

1. Yes it is possible (although unlikely). what you need to do is have a retina screening to find out. at this point, it's either you have it or you don't.

2. As for your health card, you have to ask THEM if they will cover it. it's their decision not ours. Bihira kasi nilang i-cover. Some people high enough in the totem pole have "platinum plans" that do cover it.

At st.luke's, if you have lasik at the age of 20 and you need lasik again at the age of 50, st.luke's won't charge you anymore.

I have a 375/400 vision with astigmatism, fear ko din ang lumabo ng lumabo ang mata. Doc, aside from St. Lukes po ba san pa merong lasik operation na may warranty, sabi nga :)

Can i also have your clinic schedules, i wanted to visit you once makabakasyon kami.

TIA.

it's one of the best decisions i've ever made in my life! my eye sight is now much better. no need to wear glasses, although hindi naman 100% naging perfect ang vision ko (medyo malabo pa din yung malayo for me). pero still, sulit sha. sulit talaga!

May kamahalan pero we considered it a good investment. Naninibago pa rin si hubby kase napapahawak sya sa gilid ng eyes niya para ayusin sana yung frame yun pala wala namng frame at kagabi kala niya suot niya yung eyeglasses niya un pala yung Protective eyeshields ang suot niya hehe!
