Here's a baby sling 'how-to' I made just for this group. My baby is 10 mos old. Please note that I don't sell sling. I'm just a happy user. Carriers also got advantages over slings but we'll discuss that next time.

1)First you always fix the 'flower' this is just spreading out the fabric in the ring to rid of twists that can make adjustments difficult. More of this is explained on your sling manual and video.

2)Make sure you know which side of the tail to pull. The upper side to adjust the inner rail and ...

3)the lower side to adjust the outer rail. You need not pull the middle part to make a deeper pocket. I'm making a pouch for a kangaroo carry.

4) Even if I'll do a front facing carry, I still need to fix the sides so the lapels will be neat.

5) And so here's my pouch
(https://live.staticflickr.com/2331/2219806472_308e58ee02.jpg)

JC is already 10 mos and weights 10kg. He's outgrown the kangaroo so now I'll do a type which is also like the kangaroo but with his legs sticking out. This type of carry is not in the manual so I'll call it the "kuyakoy" carry.

6) Now I pull the corresponding railing (or side, or hem line) on the tail fabric to snug JC in place. I'm not carrying JC here. His weight is already inside the pouch, I'm just supporting his bottom with my arm while I'm still adjusting the sling. It's better to this this sitting down if you haven't the knack of it yet.

7) Make sure the bottom fabric is this high to ensure he's seated deep in the pouch.

This Kuyakoy carry can cause the back of baby's knee to have creases so I can't carry him like this for more than 30 mins, or until he starts moving uncomfortably. Danger here: When the baby suddenly stretch his legs out, he might fall off the pouch so you need 1 arm under the baby's arm and to his front for support. Only 1 arm is free. It may look like his knees are already pressed on his shoulder, but no. Only the pocket is deep to keep him secured. We do this kind of carry every morning to get some sun. He's already popular in the neighborhood. When in the mall, I put socks and shoes of course  ;) . Is he comfy? He doesn't complain.

You can use the tail to cover his head in case it starts to rain or if the sun's too hot. In most cases and for your comfort, you can just throw the tail behind your shoulder so you won't feel like Moses or Joseph.

Next time, I'll post about the side carry.

wow...the demo is really cool mommyjazz...
i've been wanting to get a sling for so long pero hesitated kasi parang it's not easy to use.  but the demo is so convincing and it's really cute to look at. kaso lang, i think my julian is too big and heavy for the sling na.  huh...might as well make another baby... ::) hehe...

Pareho lang po iyon, only you need to keep the baby's legs inside the pouch. He can do indian sit or with the soles of his feet clapped together. The video that came with your sling has this demo. Just see to it that his legs aren't too high that it's pressed on to his chest. Nasa tamang paghila lang yan ng tail. You can keep his arms out of the pouch so he won't feel so restrained and carry him around so he'll get entertained. I can't demo kangaroo because my baby's too big na. My baby started to get uncomfortable with the kangaroo carry when he turned 5 months.

Consider the advantages and disadvantages of a sling over a carrier muna before buying. Slings are also expensive, some carriers are cheaper. Some also can't get to wear their slings right that they give up. It takes practice kasi. You can still use sling on your toddler just for fun. Toddlers can walk and don't need it, besides, their too heavy na. Sometimes Ate Julia gets jealous and wants to be carried too. She's 4.

hmmm...hi mommies...at what age of the baby is it okay to start using a sling...?
Sorry if I have to answer this here. This is a much appropriate board than marketplace.
I started using the sling when my baby was 2 weeks old., I was even breastfeeding while I'm shopping. The sales ladies aren't aware I'm nursing under the sheet, it's so descreet kasi. The baby can even fall asleep in lying position after nursing. Now my baby is 11 mos, he's outgrown his carrier (the stitches are giving out, he's getting too heavy for it) but not the sling.

Sling can also be used as a seatbelt. In some restos, highchairs lack seatbelts. So there.
In another forum about travelling with a child, a mom got to use her sling as a pillow and blanket for her baby.

Update Nov 10, 2008:

When eating in a resto, make sure the high chair you put your baby has passed a safety standard for high chairs. The rubbermaid brand (used in jollibee and by many restos) and those in McDonald's are safe because it has wheels. The picture taken here (taken at Gourmet's Cafe at Tagaytay) was before my baby had an accident with Cabalen's high chair. We strapped him with my sling then he pushed the table in front of him falling backwards hitting his head on the floor. It was horrible. He was fine after a while, thank God. Til now I don't know if I should complain. Cabalen's high chairs are custom-made for the resto. It's just a high chair with armrest, no seatbelt and legs are too steep and straight. It has to be angled to prevent such accidents. I noticed that other restos have their own custom-made high chairs (like the one in the picture) which didn't undergo any standard inspection (if there's such). So please be aware of high chairs when eating out.

i just recently bought our sling at indigomanila and was happy about it.

nag mall kami and attended a bday party na walang ka hassle hassle, im totally hands free and my Vierte was comfortable in it na nakatulog na sya habang namamasyal.

though di pa ako gaanong sanay mag switch from sitting position to feeding position.

Sling Side Carry

5) Carry your baby on your side with your waist in-between his legs.

6) put the pouch of the sling behind him
(https://live.staticflickr.com/2062/2219817602_741468906c.jpg)

7) spread the pouch all over his bottom
(https://live.staticflickr.com/2257/2219817724_5506a0296f.jpg)

8 ) pull loose cloth for a snug fit
(https://live.staticflickr.com/2166/2219025337_898c8892ea.jpg)

9) follow the hemline or railing of the loose cloth to know which side of the cloth to pull from the ring.

10) pull
(https://live.staticflickr.com/2410/2219818028_67776917c7_z.jpg)

11) perfect! This kind of carry however is not favored by all babies. My boy still likes the kangaroo and kuyakoy carry.

Ate gets jealous too.

Please note that I don't sell sling or do demo. I'm just a happy user.

MommyJaz- Thank's for sharing info about the sling. I will definetly get one for my second baby. Lalo na lagi kaming on the go! You're the only who's able to convince me to use one ;)

I used sling on my baby from the time he's 2 weeks old. I was breastfeeding while shopping. pwede kasing pantakip yung tail ng cloth. I also put a pillow for him to lie on para flat siyang nakahiga. The place has to be airconditioned para hindi siya mainitan while sleeping in the sling. If it's your 1st time to use it, practice with a heavy doll muna. It takes practice to use a sling. Maraming naiinis and give up using it kasi mabusisi but very easy pag nakasanayan na.
Mas convenient ang carrier kasi you just drop the baby inside and go. Other family members can also carry the baby using the carrier. With the sling, you have to learn and practice kaya ako lang ang nakakabitbit ng baby using a sling. The sling however, can be used until the baby is too heavy for you to carry. The carrier is only upto when the baby reached a certain weight or age in months.

hi mommyjazz,

Thanks! I was not able to thank you then because I gave birth na, got busy with the baby then went back to work, got busy naman with work. But just the same, would like to thank you talaga. Tips were very useful. Im a happy sling user na. Kaya lang I purchased a different kind of sling, yung parang nakatahi na. Hindi ko magamit as blanket. But just the same it was very useful. It became part of my wardrobe. Thanks again...

And to all the mommies who are planning to use sling, mommy jazz is right. It just takes a lot of practice. Sometimes masakit sa back, but you just have to find a better position. And the pain is nothing compared to the bonding. Im a working mom, I do not have much opportunity to be with my children 24/7, bonding time with them is something that I always look forward to. And the sling is my way to bond with my bunso. I also noticed that my bunso is the most malambing. Ate and kuya are also malambing but bunso is more malambing. Am not sure if the sling has something to do with it kaya lang sya lang ang nag sling. Or is it because I can feel it more because mas malapit sya lagi sa akin?

thanks and goodluck mommies!

Mom Jet

Mom Jet
The back pain can be minimized if the cloth is evenly distributed flat on your sides and back. I get more pain using the carrier actually. With a carrier, masakit agad sa shoulders and I've a tendency to slouch because of the baby's weight.

thanks mommy..

On rjellybeans website, the sling can even carry an adult. I stopped using it on my baby when he turned 13 mos kasi talagang mabigat na and he wants to walk na rin when we go out. I bought the rjellybeans from baby&co bec it guarantees that the rings are very strong and durable. When my husband saw it, he suggested that we get rings from cloth/cutain supplier and have one made nalang. I insisted on the product kasi I won't be sure of the safety if I have one made.
Take precaution when carrying a toddler on a sling. He moves a lot already and might extend his legs straight and stretch while seated on the sling pocket and he might slip and fall off the sling.

hi mommies, im a happy user of a sling too.. nakita ko advantage over carrier..

my times pa n sa mall mkakatulog si baby so hirap kpg wala ka stroller, mas ok kung sling kc may right position pra matulugin sya, plus you can move freely..

meron sa indigo babies, sa knila ako nkabili nung my event sa medical city nun.. mabait yung seller, she taught me how to use it pa.. =)

Anyone? My son is 5 months old lang pero mahaba sya 70cm na sya ngayon almost the length of a 1 year old.

sis f u try sling it has d same effect-very intimate w/ babies bec they r so snug.. :)

mas ok nga lang kz nakadikit na sayo si baby hands free ka pa if u want (of course u can still hold them) :)

hi mommy raycemom, my yzabel wants tummy to tummy position din based on my experienced di naman nasasaktan legs niya kasi kung di sya comfortble iiyak c baby and malambot yung tela. nung binyag ni baby naku sling lang gamit ko kaya lang puro tulog lang ginawa niya.pag namamasyal kami gamit ko sling for 3 hrs or more pa inaalis ko lang siya pag change ng diaper.she's now 4months.

hi..sakin from the start im using baby pouch kay curt mas ok siya for curt kaysa sa carrier talaga..parang same na rin yung for baby sling..difference is may adjuctment ang sling..i guess its normal na sumakit yung back on the lower back..kasi ako ganun..pero tama si mommybabydoll..you need to spread the fabric at the back for support saka the way yung posture mo on how to wear the sling..kasi pagnakaayos yung fabric di siya sasakit..saka siguro if super tagal na kayo standing and walking for sure sasakit yun hehe...+ mo pa the babys weight..  ;D

it was an impulsive buy. although super research nako about slings, eh nagkataon nasa SM na ako limited lang yung designs nila. waaah sana black din yung sa'kin...ok lang summer naman.

thanks mommy. will post as soon as triumphant na ako with the bavy wearing

Both didn't work for McCoy, as he doesn't like the feeling of being a "prisoner". :-[ :'( ??? :-[ :'(

i prefer a baby sling kasi i was also able to use it in holding my baby while i breastfeed her. i dont like the traditional carrier kasi feeling ko nilagay ko sa backpack baby ko tapos kinarga ko siya.  :)

true you can move around and do things or chores sa house without fearing na mahuhulog si baby. it also promotes bonding kasi directly nakadikit si baby sayo! kaya me and my girls are very close!  :D

hi mommies! im looking for slings / baby carriers and happened to see this topic. questions po:

1) hindi po ba nangangalay un legs ng baby kung naka-indian sit style sila sa loob ng pouch?
2) for baby boys, hindi po ba naiipit un "birdies" nila like kapag naka-cradle style for BF or kapag naka-side carry sila?
3) i know some babies, like mine , are pawisin. hindi po ba sila madaling pagpawisan kapag nasa loob nun pouch? isip ko lang po kasi pagBF namin ng baby son ko , pinagpapawisan talaga siya. sabi po ng MIL, mainit raw un katawan ko kaya ganun.

pls help to enlighten. thanks po and Godbless!

My son loves the kangaroo carry and I get worried about his legs in "indian-cross". He doesn't complain but to be sure, I change his position or take him out of the sling for a stretch every 30 mins. Minsan nga nakakatulog siya in that position. I think it's different for every baby. Some are contented with side carry. My baby hated it. Gusto niya forward facing siya lagi.

Same goes for the question kung nakakasakang ang side carry. Get him out for a stretch every 30 mins. This isn't mentioned on the manual but for your peace of mind, even if the baby doesn't complain, try it.

Papawisan kaya ang baby? Yes. But same when he's in a carrier. Sling's material is lighter than a carrier so he won't get as sweaty unless he's wearing a thick clothing or out in the sun. For the sling-pouch. I haven't tried that yet. There is another type of sling na may pouch na.

with my son, i bought carrier talaga kasi when he was 3weeks old, we always to go to the doctor (weekly) for the cast change due to his clubfeet)

Then i also noticed when he is in carrier for a long period of time, medyo nag-iiba ang color ng legs niya kaya i lift his legs para mawala ang discoloration.

i agree, we have to constantly monitor their legs, kasi they dont complain but it's our duty/responsibility as parents to ensure their safety, db?

hi mommies! :) if you currently use or think of using a baby sling, whether it's a ring sling or other types of slings, please check the 2 links i found below to help you understand what is safe for your baby and what is not. i found these 2 sites in my attempt to learn more about baby wearing. hope this helps some confused moms/ dads out there!

link 1: in FB search: Babywearing Safety - you can read the infos, links, pictures, etc.

link 2: http://www.thebabywearer.com/articles/HowTo/Positioning.pdf- instruction manual.

i found both sites very helpful and i learned a lot! eventhough i've been wearing the sling for some time now, madami ako natutunan. enjoy reading and please feel free to post here other sites that you've read that will help other moms. baby wearing doesn't just depend on your preference kung anung style iwewear si baby.. it also has a lot to do with safety. awareness is the key so spread the word! :) God Bless! :)

Hello everyone! I'm new here.

Anyway, we make our own baby wrap. Sa US kasi, it's highly recommended na i-wrap kesa sling.. slings kasi medyo kulang pa sa support eh.

You could check our facebook page for the benefits.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=116354738464612&set=a.116353951798024.14095.100002702593087&type=1&theater

Pero basically, our wrap

-decreases the weight of your baby
-kaya no back pain for the one carrying
-can be used with babies 0-3 years old
-can carry up to 17 kgs
-more affordable than other commercial wraps
-can be used by anyone kasi it's highly adjustable

Check niyo lang.. it won't hurt you naman. :) We've had a lot of buyers thanking us kasi it really works.

Hi sis! Naku, i love baby wraps! Nakita ko din moby wrap, pero namamahalan ako..what i did. Ang maganda sa mga wraps, dikit na dikit talaga sayo si baby, and yung weight is evenly distributed to your shoulders and back! :)

Share ko lang pic nung wrap ko.  ;D

@sis ritz:

heheh in my own opinion lang po.. :)

@rodcielle07. Yep sis, bumili lang ako ng tela. Jersey cloth tawag nila.

:) i tried yung Aprica carrier. If you want, i can teach you to DIY wraps. Then research ka sa youtube how to do it.

Babywearing helps to develop balance, language skills, and independence.

Parents who wear their babies are secure in baby’s well being, can snuggle on-demand, are able to nurse hands-free (okay, moms only), and are able to keep up with other activities while keeping baby close.
-got this from "wrap you baby, an act of love)

If your from QC, i know a place where you can buy the tela. Jersey cloth is yung tela kagaya sa mga cotton T-shirts natin. Not like spandex na mainit. :)

sis san dito ao batangas eh.. pag sinabi ko ba sa bilihan ng tela yung cotton  jersey eh alam na nila kung ano yun? and 5 yards ba binili mo? nasearch ko kasi 5 yards tapos hahatiin sa gitna to make 2 wraps.. pero kung gusto mo naman ng 2 layers eh ifold na lang for better security kasi makapal..

can you give me a link kahit hindi video about how to make DIY wraps?

sadya napakamahal ng moby wrap.. pero yung nabili ko kasi 2nd hand na.. kulay red.. tsaka makapal eh at mabigat kasi ang haba sobra hehe.. gusto ko nga gupitin sa gitna para makagawa akong 2 wraps out of it.. kaso nanghihinayang ako..

nabasa ko pa na no need to sew the edges kasi nagcucurl up naman daw yun at pag isinuot eh hindi na kita.. tinahi mo pa ba yung edges ng sayo?

thanks

@camsangeline

sis meron online.. sa amazon.com meron.. kaso around $40-$45 lang naman.. so pricey.. kaya naisip ko gawa na lang ako after ko mabenta yung sakin.. yung sakin kasi from a friend rin lang eh.. bmagdiy ka na lang. watch youtube for instructions.. no ssewing needed.. bili ka lang tela (cotton jersey or cotton) mga 5 yards.. 3 wraps na magagawa muh dun.. :) npero kung keri naman ng budget mo bumili eh why not.. but syempre sayang din.. puwede mo pa maibili ng ibang gamit ni bebe.. if bibili ka ng tela nasa 500-600 lang magagastos mo.. hope this helps.

Hi, I once consulted a lactation consultant, nirecommend niya sa akin is malong ( kasi mura) and she taught me how to maneuver it to make it a sling. very ok yung malong sa akin kasi naghanap lang ako sa cabinet namin. what i like about it is maluwag sya at kung newborn pa lang, pinapahiga ko ang baby ng diretso, hindi naka-curl. So i was not scared na baka hindi makahinga si baby. Pero i dont really care because babywearing is far more convenient than carrying a baby with our hands, especially kung mabigat na si baby.

Haha, I remember when I first bought my sling. I find it pricey pero go lang and it was in a box so My husband has no idea what it was. Nung nilabas ko he was not impressed. Napaka simple daw, pwede naman daw kami magpagawa using our malong. Anyhoo, I got to use it nang matagal and I'm happier with it than using a carrier.

i love my sling! :D It's easier for me to carry baby, move around,go malling or do errands with my baby. People still look at me in awe, hehe Either it's new for them, they're scared for my baby or they simply find it amusing.  But we do have a carrier and a stroller. The father uses the carrier and the stroller is used whenever the 3 of us goes out.

Mommies, I want to start baby wearing narin. My baby just turned 3mos yesterday and I want to start soon. I can't do anything here at home kasi gusto lagi ng baby ko magpabuhat. I texted Bailey Wrap yesterday but the eagle blue wrap that I want is not available. Baka may nagbebenta jan sainyo ng Bailey wrap or Moby wrap niyo. I'm interested. Kung wala akong mabili soon, I'm planning to make my own nalang din. TIA!!  ;)
