Title: How do u prepare ur kids for the coming examination week
Post by: MmyJorayma on August 10, 2009, 12:20:20 pm
Hi mommies! My eldest son, Karl, will be having their 1st qtr exam next week.

This is our first time, my kid and I, to undergo this stage kaya lahat first time namin when it comes to his school activities...

Kaya hingi sana ako tips from mommies out there on how you prepare your kids during these times.  And also share na rin kayo strategies on how you make your kids excel at school.

Thanks in advance.

hi MmyJorayma,

the same with assignment, at first we just read the instruction to her (nung hindi pa sya marunong magbasa) pero ng matuto na sya magbasa kahit mabagal, we let her read the instruction (both english and tagalog) and ask her to do it. and i just later check if she did it correct... :-*

Hi mommy!!

Yes, practice, practice, practice... sa bilis ng pagturo ngayon, your child won't master the concepts in just one or two sittings.

If you get the chance, please visit Schoolkid.Ph (www.schoolkid.ph) This has worksheet collections made by parents.

So far, it has worksheets from preschool up  to grade 3... in time, mabubuo din ang buong elementary.  This is great for parents na minsan busy and di na makagawa ng mga practice worksheets at reviewers. Also, ito lang ang may mga worksheets for Filipino and Araling Panlipunan kaya pagdaating ng elementary, you will really appreciate these worksheets.

And kung gumagawa ka rin ng worksheets for your child, then maybe you can share them with the other parents also through Schoolkid.Ph :-)

I personally make Lana's review papers :) I make her reviewers na para din siyang nag eexam to get her adapted on how to take the test. Complete with writing her name and all. Up to this day na Prep na siya ganun pa din. She even reminds me now to make her reviewers.

Before answering the review test I gave her, we review first from her books and worksheets tapos test proper na kuno. After that we will check her papers together. This technique works for us kasi it encourages her more to do good in school. She's enjoying it as well and ang end result very good grades.  :D

Yung anak ko grade 1 ngayon exam din next week, kaya meron din akong test paper na naka-ready for him kapag nag-review na kami the day before nung exam.

my eldest is in Kinder and they always have quizzes every friday. so when she gets home on Monday i already study what they have studied & from ther gumagawa na ko reviewer.  Often I do reviewrs in advance para before the quiz day comes sagot na lang sya ng sagot sa reviewer ko.

Last week they had their quarterly exam.  so two weeks before that i started reviewing her na. casual lang, minsan i just ask her a certain object, she'll answer if living or non-living thing.  sa dining table i put things together and answers me if it's equal or non-equal or less than or greater than. everyday yun, several times a day kahit naliligo sya :D

I had a hard time reviewing my grade 1 daughter in math kasi hate niya yun. I reviewed her for 3 days before the math test and satisfactory naman ang grade niya. However, hindi naging maganda yung paraan ng review namin. No matter how I make it look exciting by printing online worksheets, hindi pa rin maganda ang outlook niya. She hates math so much that I discovered she has unanswered pages in her book and past undone assignments she didn't tell me. I was thinking of enrolling her at Galileo na, but I have a last idea.
After her exam, we go over her math everyday, may assignment man siya o wala. I want to see what they took up in school and review her that at home. Pag walalng assign, we study in advance. IT WORKED!
Now she's proud that she knows the new lesson better than her classmates kasi napagaralan na namin sa bahay. Finally she discovered the joy of getting the right answer and is not scared of numbers anymore. Mas madali pag day-to-day ang study rather than cram pag malapit na ang exam.

I agree mommyjazz.. dapat daily ang learning especially in subjects like Math kasi it will take time and lots of practice to master that. Also, it will raise her quiz scores... and quizzes are as equally important as the exam.

Sa elementary school ng 2 kids ko, quiz marks are 2/3 of the final grade and exam scores are only 1/3. Before school started I explained this to them, and I they agreed naman.  So now, sila pa ang nagyaya sa akin pag study time na :-)

Sana nai-apply ko rin sa akin yan when I was sill in school. Nakalakihan ko yung cramming beofre the exam. I guess working kasi parents ko noon and it wasn't their habit to study with me at home. Basta tingin lang sila sa report card and scold me when my grades are low pero walang support in how to achieve high grades.
Mas masuwerte ang generation ngayon. Mas educated na kasi mga parents.

for me, mommies i think it is important for us to know what type of learner, our child is.

like my eldest is a visual learner and my second is a kinesthetic learner. the approach i had for my eldest doesn't work much with my second child. thus, i made a different teaching/ studying techniques for each of them. by knowing this, it'll be easier to teach their lessons.

i hate math, science and sibika when i was in grade school. nevertheless, i'm determined to teach my kids to love the subjects i hate most.

in teaching math, like for my eldest i have to make drawings for him to understand place values, its like; "in placing values, your are placing the numbers in their proper places like a family in a house. there's baby ones, kuya tens, mommy hundreds and daddy thousands.."

for my second child, since his kinesthetic, i prepared chips with 'family of tens' on them (10, 20, 30, 40..) i taught him
rounding-off to the nearest tens using that...

the key is, mommies, "different techniques to different types of learners." it is a big help that we should understand our child first on how she/ he grasps learning before we could teach her/him at home. it'll be frustrating on their part and ours lang. it's like putting plugs in a socket.  ;)

I agree happiemommie.. i have 3 kids that came out of my womb with 3 different personalities..  kaya iba ang pagtutor ko sa kanilang tatlo..

am so glad you brought this up. am actually working on a blog article about this (learning types) kasi when I found about this (since I'm not a teacher nor a psychologist), na-appreciate ko talaga and helping my kids study became easier.

I will check out the site you recomended and will see where my daughter fits.
She loves arts and drawing and I also did some drawings. It's just that, there are a lot to cover on such a small time kaya never na kaming mag ca-cram. Thanks too for the diff "gimmicks" you shared. NAhirapan kasi akong ituro yung round off sa kaniya. With so much to cover, I ran out of tricks.

hi mommy jazz, your child would probably be a visual type of learner. she loves seeing colors and figures. she enjoys grasping knowledge with the use of pictures or drawings.

same with my eldest. it'll help using worksheets (esp. from our fav site of our sis' here  ;)) in colors or if printers not available do worksheets or drills using colored pens. this way she wouldn't be bored. it might help also adding up colorful stickers for a job well done on her drill sheets, this will 'visually' stimulate her.;)

Ako everyday kaming nag-aaral ng mga lessons nila for the day. kaya pagdating ng exam, parang refresher na lang ginagawa namin. tapos, kino-compile ko mga quizzes and long exams aside from exercises from textboos and nagdo-download ako sa mga websites na recommended ng mga tests na kamukha ng mga binibigay ng school pagdating ng mastery check -ups nila quarterly.  sa school kasi ng anak ko, a week pa lang meron na silang prino-provide na pointers to review. in that way, mas madaling gumawa at mag-review kasi me basis na kami.
Title: Suggestion on online quiz maker site for test review
Post by: Mommy Jazz on July 29, 2011, 09:28:09 pm
Periodical exam is fast approaching. I want to try making my own online quiz based on my kid's lessons. We'll go paperless this time in our review. Any site suggestions? I found 2 but it easily bores her since the test system/game is all the same.

So far I'm using these:

I'm looking for quizzes that offers more than just multiple choice. Hope someone can help.

Ah, at last, malapit na kaming matapos. We're done with the 1st 2 difficult days of the exam week. One more day to go at madali nalang yung mga natitirang subjects.

I mentioned I used online quizzes this time. I found out I can't fully go paperless kasi there are practice quizzes I need to make on paper like math equations. My daughter didn't like the idea at first. She wants everything like the last time eh masakit sa kamay ko ang panay ang sulat. Maybe the whole online quiz thing is new to her?

Making the online quiz is pain staking but worth it kasi customized sa lesson niya and we can always go back and repeat the quiz til she gets a perfect score. Unlike sa paper, puro bura and you can't repeat it kasi mababasa niya yung previous answer niya na nakabakat pa. Things even got better for me when I found out there are already quizzes made up by other users that also cover her subjects like parts of the eye, nouns, etc. What I did is google "parts of the eye online quiz" and it gave me sites I can choose from that would be applicable.

Nadelay ang study namin at nainis ako kasi parang nabasura lahat ng pagod ko (mahirap mag customize ng test about Rizal and Regions of the Philippines).

I highly recommend supplementing your child's review with an online quiz. Just make sure your internet connection works well.

This is one of the quiz I did about Regions of PH

micah (my eldest) study regularly so that she won't be overwhelmed with the upcoming exams.  we only review the topics that are covered for the grading period.  i make my own reviewer for her.

but with her chinese class,  i just tell her to listen to her chinese teacher attentively.  but we're still planning to hire someone who could converse with her in chinese even for just once a week and to review her a week before her exams, since we are not chinese and nobody speaks chinese in the household.

Iba iba ang techniques natin but there is only one goal and that is to help and encourage our children to love schooling :)

Yes, mommies, you're all right, mas maswerte talaga ang mga bata ngayon, mas alam na natin ang value of studying kasama ang parents :)

Ako rin, may assignments man sila o wala, may quiz man the next day day or wala, review lang kami araw-araw, at least an hour a day. Pang-umaga ang daughter ko, so after school, kain muna then nood sya ng tv until 1:30 pm then rest, she can play or sleep, she can do what she wants then at around 4, gawa na kami ng assignments (kung meron) and review. Monday to Friday and Sunday ang review namin. Kapag Saturday, play day niya. If she wants to read on a Saturday, then good if not, fine :).

We have the same technique, mommy Bella swan :) araw-araw ke me quiz/exam o wala, pinapapag-aral ko talaga sya so madali na lang ang review pag ganitong quarterly exams na. Yun nga lang, since malayo house namin sa office, usually mga 6:30 na ko nakakauwi so un pa lang din yung time na nakakapag start kami ng serious study, kc kahit sinasabihan ko syang gawin na agad assignments niya pag gising niya from her afternoon nap kahit wala pa ako e Hindi pa sya ganun ka-mature (she's only in grade one) kaya mas madalas play na muna sya, o kaya naman ginawa nga niya assignment niya pero naman, halatang minadali para makapaglaro na. :)

Pag quarter exams niya i tutor her kung ready na sya or play muna or nuod tv ng 30 mins. Dapat 45 mins lang kami magtuturuan kc after that di na sya attentive, nirereview ko sa kanya yun old test sheets niya w/c i compiled and backup by her textbook yun,pag sleepy sya stop muna basta diko sya pinepressure magreview pagready na sya and always reminding her the importance ng review before ng exam kaya eager naman sya turuan

Before examination week, inuunti-unti ko nang reviewhin yung previous lessons niya to check if she still remembers them. I do this a week before. I also take extra effort to make mock-up exams per subject based on the pointers given by their teacher. I use her previous quizzes, worksheets, and book exercises as basis kung paano gagawin yung mock-up tests niya. Then a day before her actual exam, dinadaanan ulit namin ng short review yung pointers, then I have her take the mock-up exam for that particular subject. :)

In my case, sanay na kasi yung daughter ko with tests and worksheets, so I use the 'traditional' method ng pag-review. Although I also incorporate other ways, like for math, I use clay and objects. Nag-games din kami minsan, and we transform mga kailangan imemorize into songs. May pep talk pa talaga kami on the day of the exam itself na ginawa naming song para matandaan niya (Listen, focus, think, answer). :D

On a daily basis naman, pagka-uwi namin, eat, rest, play muna sya for a couple of hours. Then gawa na assignment pag meron/review pag may quiz/ or just go through her lessons for the day. Max na yung  one hour, pero average of 30 mins lang talaga kami para di masyado mabigat for her. :)

I think it's important to incorporate a study routine in kids - hindi dahil gusto mo silang 'i-pressure' mag-aral kundi para ma-instill sa kanila ang disiplina. Mahirap sa umpisa kasi siempre what kids want to do is play, pero once they get used to it, hindi na kayo mahirapan pag kailangan ng study session. :)

My parents were very impressed with how Dr. Cortez and Teacher Celia handled the classes back then, it was very child-friendly.

We didn't speak much English at home but the students were required to speak English all the time and I think that's how I became confident speaking the language- at the age of five! :) Fortunately, I graduated as the class valedictorian for that year. I think it was in 1991 (Hahaha, I'm old! ).

I remember running around the school grounds, the sandbox, the playhouse! It was such a great experience for me :) Send your kids to this school, it's totally worth it. :-)

I am thankful for the ideas from this website. Ever since, I have questions towards my baby, I ready opinions and comments here. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, I also want to share my experiences.. s instance n ito, yung pagrereview.. My toddler starts schooling at 2. 5 years old. Yes, may nagsabi maaga. Indeed, madami po talaga comments but then naniniwala ako that the mother knows best. And of course, fron the guidance of the Lord.  Straight n kc mgsalita anak ko, matanong. I told myself na kailangan kong sbayan development nea. it has nothing to do with too early or what for a child. I am just thinking of her. Sana ganun tayo. Let us not compare. Every child is unique. In fact, out of fun, we made a vlog. Search for our Youtube channel: mommy vee zee n lang. Makikita nui pgreview namin for her basic exam. Different techniques para hindi maboring.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KaOHLFHZAU Thanks, mommies! :)
