Feedback on SPED schools
« on: October 07, 2008, 04:42:36 pm »

To moms with special kids,

Hi! I started this topic to pay forward the school which encouraged us to get early intervention for my son who was diagnosed recently with Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). We had a second opinion with another developmental pediatrician and this time the diagnosis is Mild Global Developmental Delay and Delayed Language Disorder to consider ADHD. Even though their diagnosis are different, their recommendations are the same and both doctors and the preschool share the belief that early intervention will help a lot in overcoming the disorder. My son's preschool is called Kids 'R Us and it's the teachers' periodic assessment and during the one-on-one parent-teacher meeting that they convinced us to seek help. So, for those living within Marikina, Antipolo and Cainta areas you can contact Kids 'R Us at tel: 250-0488 and cel #09194348354.

For those who know of SPED schools, therapy centers, clinics, activity areas that you have good or bad feedbacks, kindly post them here so that our special kids need not go through unnecessary experiences.

HI mommy pinkyn.. ask ko lang sino doctors ng anak mo.. kasi yesterday nagpamedical check up kami for our visa application tapos sabi ng doctor na tumingin sa min may developmental delay daw anak ko.. so nirefer niya ako sa isang psychologist and developmental pediatrician..
actually sa totoo lang medyo nagulat rin ako at naguguluhan sa initial findings ng doctor. kasi part ng medical exam ng anak ko eh physical assessment lang at walang psychological test.. parang bara bara nga yung pag physical exam niya sa anak ko as in napakadali lang wala pang 5 mins.. tinignan lang yung bibig, tenga tapos pinaghubad pa siya. at habang nag P.E (physical exam) eh kinakausap niya yung anak ko.. eh yung mga ask niya hindi naman familiar sa anak ko like mag ask siya "what is your favorite food? "what is your favorite MC do or jollibee? tas ask pa siya "Where is your mommy?"eh hindi naman kami maturo nung anak ko kasi hindi naman mommy tawag niya sa kin kundi "mama".

Don't worry baka talagang wala sa mood kaya di nakipag-interact yung child mo with the MD. However, one of the signs kc of developmental disorder is if a child does not point at things that are familiar or of interest to him/her to get somebody's (eg. parents, yaya) attention. How old is your kid? Assess mo kaya sya sa age-appropriate developmental milestones (please click link http://www.ldonline.org/article/6313) If you're not satisfied with your own assessment, ask his teacher/s in preschool if he's attending one. Do not consult yet the clinical child psychiatrist, whose fee starts at P3,000 plus P700 for the formal report or the SPEd Diagnostician/Assessor, whose fee starts at P7,000 to P10,000 kc cheaper ang developmental pediatricians whose fees range from P2,000 to P3,000 and formal report fees range from P500-1000. We 1st consulted with Dr. Agnes Falcotelo (Tel. 372-3825 loc. 3235 sched Fri-Sat 3-6PM), a dev pedia from Capitol Medical Center. The initial evaluation took 1 hour and as parent, I was asked to fill-out a questionnaire re: my child's behavior and skills level. My child was asked to identify pictures, do some shape puzzles, sort, stack and string medium-sized beads. Dr. Falcotelo also asked him some questions and observed his behavior. My son did the same activities with Dr. Stella Manalo (Tel. 633-6686 Wed 2-5PM, Th 9AM-5PM, Sat 9AM-4PM), dev pedia from Medical City. We got good testimonials for both doctors from other parents that's why we chose to consult with both of them. By appointment pala sila and if your assessment and the teacher's assessment are indicative of a disorder, then call immediately kc dev pedias' scheds are always booked way ahead of time. momsy, parang ganyan din ang ngyari sa amin nung anak ko.. last yesterday we went to the hospital and i was really upset. kasi yung inaakala kong magaling at gov.t hospita ay libre. lam ninyo ang ngyari pumila kami ng mhaba at para makaabot lang sa pila gumising kami ng maaga. pero walang ngyari! yung doctor na tumingin sa kanya parang kagaya ng ginawa niya kay momy pinkyn. hinusgahan niya agad ang anak ko ng di naman niya nabibigyan ng oras. masama ang loob ko dahil ngbayad ako ng di ako nakontento sa mga ginawa niya. paanu niya na sabi na kelangan ng kung ano anung test sa anak ko ganun sandali niya lang kinausap ito. syempre pagod na ang bata ng kinausap niya kaya dina rin siya gaanu pinansin nito. pero mali sila, dapat bigyan nila ng oras para makausap nila ang bata. hindi yung konting tanung yun na agad ang findings nila. kaya dina ako babalik dun sa doctor na yun. kawawa naman yung mga bata. :'(

mommies, advise lang po..dapat po battery of tests an ibibigay sa bata..hindi lan po dapatna inerview at dapat po within a specific period of time kasi ang psychological and physiological delays ng isang bata hindi basta basta nakikita. pero pa dapat seond r even up to fourth visit sa doctor at un nga may mga series of interactions through play and stories...

and it is so heartbreaking for us parents na yung anak natin mala label ng mali kasi lang hasty assssment ang ginawa ng doctor.

CORRECTION LANG PO. Hindi sa anak ko nangyari yung hasty diagnosis ng doctor kundi ki mommydheng. Hindi rin kami sa government hospital nagpacheck up kundi sa Capitol med the 1st time and sa Medical City nung second time. WALA akong reklamo sa dev pedias na tumingin sa anak ko kc pareho silang MAHUHUSAY and one hour session allotted time nila consisting of interviews and several tests. "Custardcake" pakibasa po ulit mga previous posts sa thread na ito ng hindi ka nagkakamali. Nakakahiya sa dev pedias ng anak ko kung maling impression sa kanila ang maging bunga ng post mo. Naku naman!

welcome aboard daddy!
happy that you are a hands-on dad to your baby.

you've been going to skills pala (we're referring to skill builders right?) dyan galing baby ko, minsan rin kasi daddy nasa therapist/s rin talaga. its a good decision na pag-feeling mo walang improvement change the therapist. but of course, this will depend on how you gauge your expectations sa therapy sessions niyo.

here is the link to the list of therapy centers here in manila, you might want to keep this for future reference. i can't assure you they are cheap but try to ask nalang daddy.

in up-pgh, i believe P50/ hr ang session you really have to bear the long line queues.

good luck po, stay in touch dito po sa sp you'll learn a lot here.

have a nice day!  :D

i just want to share my story. i have a 9 years old son who is hearing impaired. at first katulad rin ng ibang mommy un reaction ko nung narinig ko na sinabi ng dev. pedia na hearing impaired ang anak ko. nung sinabi niya yun d ako makapaniwala then i ask his doctor how come na hearing impaired ang anak ko eh kapag tinatawag ko siya lumilingon siya, kapag inuutusan ko siya nakakasunod siya. the problem kaya ko siya dinala sa developmental pedia is because delayed ang speech niya then my developmental pedia explained to me na hindi iig sabihin na sinabi mong hearing impaired eh bingi na may level din pala yun. mild, moderate, severe and profound. so he advice me na my son need a series of test to make sure. the findings in st.lukes my child has moderately-severe binnaural hearing impairment. after that we go to ust for another test and the result is the same.we go back to our developmental pedia and he said that my son need to fit a hearing aid. he also said that he need to undergo  speech therapy. Now my son is currently studying at joseph gualandi school for hearing impaired  (oral school not sign language) and i'm happy that my son can speak clearly now. my advice is wag muna tau magalit or magduda agad sa doctor if they said na there is something wrong with our child wala naman mawawala sa atin if i coconsider natin ang findings niya kxe diba kung tama un findings niya at least mas magagawan natin ng remedy hanggat maaga. by the way my developmental pedia is DR. FRANCIS DIMALANTA of st. lukes and I can attest na he's really good.

hi mommies!
dnt feel so bad if your child was diagnosed to have special needs. It is better yun may early intervention so there will be a better chance of development.
My friend told me that there are school who can cater to children with special need.  there's one in paranaque with mainstre]reaming and therapy (PT/OT/ABA)
KCMA 822-2545
hope this can help

hi im a newbie here!

@daddy - yep i believe depende sa therapist ang improvement ng bata. before sa skill builders ang center ng son ko. magaling OT niya, ambilis ng improvement ng son in less than a month napapasunod niya son ko and my son is able to finish all his task with minimum whining. but, medyo hindi ako happy sa facilities. medyo maliit at masikip. not advisable for my son kasi mahilig syang tumakbo at magjump. so lumipat kami sa Therapy Works, pque city. maganda facilitiie nila, may play ground sa backyard and swimming pool for Aqua Therapy, malaki din rooms nila. separate rooms for OT, physical and speech.

@happiemommie - yes P50/hr UP CAMP therapy center. i called them before (when im still scouting for magandang center) but i learned na ang mga OT nila are students palang (interns ata tawag nila) so hndi pa talaga mga professional OTs, PTs at SPs ang maghahandle sa mga bata.
