for me it depends kung saan ka sanay...

image from http://www.singersewingmachine.com

I suggest that you start with the simple stitches on this new machine before you go to complex creations since eto na rin ang magiging sewing partner niyo lifetime.
Hirap kasi sa manual, lalo na yung de pedal at may leather belt pa, nakakapagod sa paa while your hands are busy. Unlike electric sewing machines na foot press lang and you can concentrate more on your handwork. The advantage naman po kasi in learning the manual type is you get to know the parts and function, mas simple kasi ang parts ng manual. Sa manual madali makahanap ng parts pag may nasira so make sure you know where to get the parts for your portable type when you buy it.
COmpared witth the portable type, the old type has a longer arm with wider space for your cloth material. Pwede kang magtahi ng kurtina or bed cover. You can also use different kinds of needle kung jeans o linen and tatahiin mo. Check if your portable type has this feature also. Advantage naman with this modern type is it has many stitches to choose from.
Ako I got this, the JML brand

imagge from http://www.ssetiram.com

Your seller is correct. Walang-wala ang JML compared sa Singer. I bought that kasi nahihiya ako to borrow my MIL's big elec sewing machine besides, mabusisi ilabas, iassemble at isoli. Now that she passed away, wala nang gumagamit.
