Letting my son commute to and from school?
« on: December 22, 2012, 10:20:20 pm »

My son is 10yrs old and is in 5th grade. He wants to commute to and from school already. Should I allow him or not?

Depends sa distance, sa time ng uwian, and sa character ng son mo. We were taught to commute (going home lang) since grade 2 (8years old).  Travel time was about 1 hour, spanning about 5 km ride, one ride nga lang.

We were taught a lot about early commuting. We were taught indepedence, presence of mind, and being responsible.

We live in the province were everything is 5 minutes away from home (hindi pa kami city kundi big municipality), and I had to ponder this. I agree with our earlier mommy reply that it depends on the distance and your child's disposition. It also helps if he has a companion (maybe a neighbor who goes to the same school?). :D

Personally, I had schoolservice until highschool and just started commuting only at 15. Medyo malayo yung eskwelahan.

You also have to consider what kind of friends your son has. Dapat hindi mga lakwatsero - I warned my son about having friends like those.  8)

one thing that worries me is that may mga driver kasi na kahit di pa nakakaakyat masyado ng jeep eh biglang umaandar na. :(

^ agree mommies may mga driver talagang ganun. which is nakaka worry talaga.. mas better kung sasabihan mo son mo na sabihin sa driver na WAIT pag sasakay at bababa..

Of course i also share mine..( i dont know if  it off the topic na )
My daughter is 7 years old _ turning 8 on april which is 2nd grade,, since wala na siyang yaya,, bale, sa morning hinahatid ko siya sa school. then pag uwi, siya nalang mag isa. Yung School niya is walking distance lang from our house for about 10 mins.. so todo remind lang sa kanya na do not  with someone she don't know. and yung mga magsasabi na kilala ako , at pinapasundo siya.. then do not go sa mga friends para lang mag play.. I made a deal with her as well, since 1'o clock or quarter to 1 siya dmartng sa bhay, i told her na dapat bago ako umalis ng bahay to go to work, andun na siya, In short dapat maabutan  niya ko sa bahay bago ko umalis.. so far ok naman ang set up namin..

I already allowed my son to commute going home from school on his own. One ride lang naman kasi school niya from our house and one of  the school staff/guard assists him in getting a jeepney ride.

Maybe if he's already in high school, I'll allow him to commute. But he can only ride tricycle from school straight to our home. Sa morning, school service muna until I see that he's already capable of commuting.

10-14 years ago :P , 5 years akong naka school bus then nung nag grade 4 (9 y/o) ako nag commute na ako from Sikatuna Village to St. Mary's College sa bandang Timog (jeep + lakad).

I have to take her to school hatid sundo until she knows the routes and alternatives. Surprisingly, in a few weeks hindi lang marunong sumakay ng LRT, marunong na ring makisiksik without complain. It's sad na ang transportation system natin ay kulang sa order and safety.
Snatchers are everywhere so I tell her to keep her phone sa hindi madaling madukot. And it's not her fault should she be a victim. Skilled talaga sila. Good think hindi ko siya tinatatkot sa security guards and police. Taught her to report and call me should anything happen. Don't want her to suffer the shock of getting victimized.

per my own experience, my parents let me commute to and from school at that same age.

siguro you have to check the following:

To and From the School?
