I've a friend who taught her toddler son the diff kinds of love kasi he's having a crush on his classmate. His Mom said, there's family love (Filial), Love for God (divine) and Friendship love. Now this should be classified as platonic but she was referring to romantic kasi kids don't understand romance yet. So, the love he feels for his classmate is called 'friendship love'.
I could explain the same to my daughter, but she might give her friends a long kiss too thinking it's just a friendship kiss. Ano na?
I've nothing against her seeing kissing scenes kasi nga, disney princess stories has it. I don't want to stop her from watching Dyesebel just because I don't have the right explanation yet. Besides, she picks up the moral of the story and lately is getting more creative in her drawings because she sees this on the show.

hi mommy jazz.  i like the idea of the different kinds of love but explaining that to a 3 or 4 year old, hmmm. medyo mahirap. maybe we can simplify like: mommy and daddy kiss, baby kiss ganun.  wen yancy saw me and hubby exchange kisses alam niya pang nanay at tatay kiss yun at me special kiss for babies at yun nga, she and her cousins created the "amiga" air kiss with matching tilamsik ng mga daliri.  maybe we as mommies can make it a game di ba?

My 2yo starts liking Blues Clues so I digged into our old VCD racks and bought new ones. I personally like Steve because he can make a lot of diff facial expressions, but my 5yo likes Joe. She wouldn't believe me when I explained to her that Steve and Joe are brothers. When she was a baby, I've seen the episode when the brothers had a turn over because Steve has to go to college. I didn't know they have it on DVD and it took me 3 video stores to find it, 1 remaining copy. It was on sale at P100 titled: Get to Know Joe. I highly recommend it to all Blues Clues fans. To me it's a collectors item. I didn't know Steve and Joe has 3 episodes together. It's funny and weird seeing them both host the show. An aging Steve and very young and skinny Joe. They both project differently on cam and their characters don't clash. It's convincing they're brothers. The part when Steve has to leave is touchy that my 5yo was teary eyed. After seeing the video, she started to like Steve too. The video also explains where the stuffed toy duck came from, why Joe has a different notebook and a lot more. There are a lot of funny momets like when Joe got to play Blues Clues for the 1st time with Steve. Parang he's on training. Steve's last words to Joe before he left was "Remember, Blue's pawprints will be on the clues."

my child is four months. we watch yo gabba gabba together. i can see she's pretty interested with the mascots kasi they have big eyes. although she doesnt understand the themes pa of the show.

naku mommies, di ata ako excited na dumating sa stage na my baby will ask about romantic love ganun, haha i dunno what im going to say. siyempre it'll will be cute pero what i have read in magazines/books/internet is that di ka na pwede magpaligoy ligoy sa mga bata nagyon.

haay, enjoyin ko muna na baby pa c sasha.

I always read that too much TV is bad for kids. How much is too much? My kids are 2 and 5yo. Our channels are glued to educational programs. If my 5yo watches a PG rated movie, I explain to her the scenes and for her to consult with me first before she uses words she picked up at Spongebob.
TV has helped my kids a lot and the time they're glued, that's when I can do housework.
An Occupational Therapist lately explained to me to cut the TV viewing of my 2yo because TV is not interactive. He may learn but won't respond which is important to developing his speech. The times I need to cut his viewing time, that's when I should spent time playing with him like puzzles, shape sorters and similar toys.
Just want to share.

How much is too much? That is also my question.  My kids are 6 yo and 20month old.  My in-laws are the one taking care of them while we (hubby and i) goes to work.  My in laws are addicted to TV (kaya nga minsan ang taas ng kuryente namin   :o  hehe! halos walang patayan yata lalo na ng magka-cable   ;))

Though, on the other hand, nagiging bibo naman ang kids sa kapapanood ng commercial  ;D my 20month old boy is dancing like nobody's business whenever he hear some commercial. he imitates the children or the commercial itself. By the way, my kids learn to appreciate national geographic and the like kasi pag dating namin ni hubby doon na nakatutok ang channels.  ;D

My 6yo daughter naman, memorize na lahat ng palabas sa lahat yata ng channel  :o  joke na lang ng mga in laws ko - tv helps sharpen the memory  ;D :D

tama un MommyJen, baby ko din kase 20mos old super biba na dahil sa kakapanood esp yung favorites nyang mickey mouse, bunny town at word world sa disney channel! halos walang patayan ang tv basta gising sya pahinga lang ata ng tv pag tulog sya e.hehe.. she already knows how to count 1-20, alphabet, animals, shapes and colors! she also loves singing and dancing, memorize pa niya yung mga name ng characters ng pinapanuod niya..pero tinutulungan ko sya sabay kami nanunuod mas natututo kase sya wen we talk about what we are watching like i ask her what color or shape was dat or how many was dat nga ule..mas madali niya naaabsorb(i think)..i only let her watch yung mga educational na palabas, kaya ako sacrifice ng mga palabas na gusto ko panuorin i watch lang pag tulog sya.
fulltime housewife kase ako at breastfeeding till now kaya super close at bonding kami to the max ng baby ko...=)

Too much of everything is not good...including TV, Which studies a have shown that it may lead to Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) because of the high speed scene change.

Try watching a regular show on TV, majority of the shows nowadays shift scenes from 2-3 seconds or less. Imagine if the child gets used to that kind of visual stimulus pace. Getting him to focus at an activity or being still for a few seconds would be a challenge for both of you. :(

Natural interaction is still the best way to go. Give some time to sit and play or even talk to your child.
Being a very busy person myself. I take it a point that I devote some time to interact with my kids even though I am so drained from work.

with micah, my pre-schooler, no TV from sunday to thursday for the whole schoolyear.  she can only watch tv after school on friday until saturday.  during vacation, we limit her tv viewing to 3 hours a day, hindi straight na 3 hours ha.  one hour n the morning, one in afternoon and one in evening.

aside from disney chanel movies and nickelodeon channel, i usually watch tv with her so that i can explain some scenes.  we even choose the shows.  she watches telenovela with me so that she can learn the tagalog dialect.  purely english speaking kasi sya.  but i explain to her every scene we watch.

with iza, my toddler, she's limited to barney, dora, sesame street, backyardigans, wonder pets, blues clues.  no other shows muna.

thanks mommy BuildingBlocksClinic..its true, i believe it and ive read several articles on books and internet abwt dat too...but as of now i do let her watch anytime she wants..i wil make sure naman po that it wil change as soon as she goes to school.
besides she doesnt watch naman po all the time, she sometimes listens lang wyl we are playing, reading or eating.
hindi din naman po sya nakatutok palage sa tv, she walks around the house or sits far away the tv or plays with her toys wyl the tv is on. gusto lang niya bukas lang ang tv at naririnig niya.
also everyday between 4-6 pm we go to the park or just outside the house to see her friends kaso paguwi tv nanaman.hehe..
nandito po kase kami sa house ng parents ko kasama brother and sister ko kaya marami din talagang interactions.
madali din naman po syang pagsabihan kung kailangan ng patayin ang tv..
so far wala naman din pong problem sa focus niya on any activity we are doing..

for me po, its just a matter of guidance nalang tska depende din po sa bata kung madaling matuto...
fulltime housewife and breastfeeding mommy naman din po ako til now even if she is almost 2yo kaya no problem sa bonding namin ni baby..
thanks :)

Vigilance is what we need when it comes to TV watching. The cartoons nowadays are full of violence and explicit scripts especially the ones in cartoon network and Nickelodeon (not the Nick Jr.). Use of words like "idiot", "stupid", "Imbecile", "Kill", "destroy", etc. are being used more often by characters which is sometimes being acquired by kids when they interact with their peers or even with their parents.

That's true. Kaya I tell my daughter that if she learns a new word on TV, she should ask me first before she use it. I try to hide my shock when she asks me about words I don't approve of like "loser". Mabait namang bata. She also asks me why her friends use the word and she can't. I just explain that she doesn't have to be like them.
I hope I can always keep up with her questions. I want to be the kind of Mom she can ask everything about so  we'll be open with each other when she grows up.
