Six (6) years old pa lang ang daughter namin noon.

Naga-advanced lessons na siya on her own.

I really can't wait until my son can read without my help. I'm going to lessen his TV time to encourage him to read more instead.

1. Establish rules and limits.
2. Do your homework.
3. Expose your children to other forms of entertainment.
4. Watch with your child.
...By watching with them, you will be able to explain things to them, not to mention that it becomes a family bonding activity as well.
5. Use it as a learning opportunity.

You can not avoid a child to watch TV unless tanggalin niyo ang TV sa bahay niyo. IN" so that they can relate with other kids else baka ma OUT OF PLACE sila.  May stages ang pagpapanood ng TV like for my daughter (4yo), she watches Disney Jr. or Nick Jr. Kung nanonood yun eldest ko ng spongebob, I don't allow my daughter to watch kasi baka maging makulit katulad ni spongebob.  She can easily absorb what she is watching.  She can remember some lines on what she is watching at magugulat na lang ako sa kung anong pinagsasabi niya (buti na lang at napapanood ko ang pinanonood niya).  She used to watch disney princesses kaya lang hindi ko nagustuhan kasi puro na lang prince charming at walang lesson unlike Barbie,  I too, love it.  Example yun Barbie Princess Charm School, tinuturo dito na one should have confidence....other barbie movie, maganda yun kanta, etc.

Tamang gabay din ang kelangan and also expose them (outside the house).

Update.  My daughter is 4y and 10mos.  aside from TV, nag Ipad na din.  Nag download ako ng Storybooks and Educational Music Media for her.  Would you believe naka memorize siya (word by word) ng 8 stories (hanzel and gretel, princess and the frog, the golden goose, the goose with the golden egg, the big great turnip, etc.)

Stories with lessons like Hanzel & Gretel. I always remind her na like the hanzel & gretel story e baka makuha siya ng bad guys.  Also, we have to explain some lines in the story like the evil stepmother.  Naisip ko baka maisip niya na evil mother yun so sabi ko stepmothers are pretend moms.  EXPLAINING is a big help.  Hindi natin maiwasan ang TV or any electronic devices.  Kahit sa school inintroduce na ito.  Some schools are using tablet like ateneo and la salle.

Stages lang yan.  Like what I've state on my past comments, child should watch shows according to their age.  Also, my daughter is in nursery medyo slow ang pace for her age, kasi na late ako ng pagpasok sa kanya sa school and to help her may phonics music sa Ipad which teaches kids the sounds and words that start with the letter... really works alam na niya sounds the letter.

Also, napansin ko maski sa eldest ko na magaling sila in retaining lessons.  Confidence na lang talaga ang kulang for my daughter.  Maybe she needs more exposure.
