^ thank you sis. And thank God hindi na nga nagka fever si kuya. medyo nabahala lang ako dun sa sagot ni pedia na since below normal RBC niya, it was probably because of G6PD pero hindi naman confirmed. for further testing pa dapat but since di na naulit fever, dropped the issue na.

sana nga dahil lang sa masamang panahon. and id like to think it that way.  :)

good day moms and dads!
here is a good website to inform yourselves regarding G6PD deficiency:
http://g6pddeficiency.org/index.php

and here is a list of foods that are not allowed for a person with G6PD deficiancy:
http://g6pddeficiency.org/index.php?cmd=contrafood

basically, G6PD deficiency is an inherited disease that lacks the enzyme called Glucose-6-Phosphate-Dehydrogenase (G6PD).  Deficiency of this enzyme PLUS contact with a food or drug (digested then absorbed into the blood) will make the red blood cells (RBC) burst open and die.  this is called hemolysis.  Even if the enzyme is missing, you can still avoid this fatal reaction by avoiding the foods and drugs that have been found to cause hemolysis with G6PD.

G6PD is inherited, meaning there is no cure.  However, the adverse reactions CAN BE AVOIDED.  your job as parents is to inform yourself very well, avoid the food and drugs listed above, and teach your child the importance of following strictly these rules.

Good luck moms and dads!

i will be happy to answer more questions through pm.

God Bless!

Hi mga mommies....

same as lahat ng mga mommies dito may g6pd din ang baby ko nadetect lang yesterday... my problem is she is only 3 weeks and 2 days old.. meron na siya agad sipon and cough.. Is it reallyy bad? We are planning to go to PGH sana kasu ang lakas ng ulan today..So we will moved it tomorrow.. Sana ok lang ang baby ko..  sobrang dami ng rashes niya sa face niya pero nagastart yun sa neck niya when she was only 1 week old.. Yesterday ko pa lang nalaman.. I was really scared for the safety of my baby. Please help me naman to know more about g6pd. Her milk is Enfalac.. Hindi rin kasi ako nagpabreastfeed sa kanya.. Is Enfalac good or not?? I just wanna make sure..

I have a son also n may g6pd... He's three years old now... Di naman na ako nagwoworry as long as n he knew already what is bawal for him to eat... Su

dear moms,

for mommy faye19ur: please read my post on page 2. i have also included 2 links there for further reading on G6PD.

it is important NOT TO PANIC.  informing yourself is the best way to handle the situation.  know what to do first then ask questions.

so, first, please have a confirmatory test done.  this is at PGH NIH. they only have a schedule for confirmation tests. tuesday and thursday.  call them up at tel 5218450.  this is at taft avenue, manila.

next.  upon confirmation, have the pediatrician explain to you what exactly \g6PD is and how it can affect your baby.  if the doctor is busy or will not explain it to you, look for reading material around the clinic, or in the internet.  there are a lot of websites that are very helpful.  i have attached 2 links in my previous post.

last.  G6PD is a hereditary disease.  meaning it is in the genes and that there is no cure.  however, it CAN BE CONTROLLED by avoiding the food and drugs that are not allowed.  kids with G6PD can have a perfectly NORMAL life if they avoid the food and drugs in the list that are not allowed.

lastly, milk is allowed for G6PD babies.  especially BREASTMILK.  please try to breastfeed first.  this is the safest and most complete form of nutrition for your newborn baby.

if you have any more questions, please fe3el free to PM me.
thanks!

God bless!

for mommy mirasol:

yes you are correct that G6PD is X-linked.  however, G6PD can still happen among females.

G6PD is x-linked recessive. the G6PD gene is located on the x chromosome.  there are many possible combinations that can predict whether the son or daughter can have G6PD based on whether the mom or the dad or both are G6PD deficient. here is a link that may help you: http://www.g6pd.org/favism/english/images/genealogy2.gif

i hope i answered your question..

pm me if you have more questions. :)

God bless!

@mommy princess:

a screening is done at birth, this is part of the newborn screening.  it is a law now in the philippines to have all babies screened for the 5 diseases included in the newborn screening program (NBS).  http://www.doh.gov.ph/faq/show/457.html

Hope this helps!

God bless!
