Babywearing for Beginners: How to Find a Baby Carrier That Works for YouBabywearing keeps your baby safe and close, while you are handsfree!by Kitty Elicay .
Babywearing has become increasingly popular in the Philippines as it gives both moms and dads the freedom to go about their daily activities while still keeping an eye on their little one. It’s helpful if you’re traveling or using public transport because compared to bulky strollers, babywearing secures your infant while allowing you to move handsfree.
How to choose a baby carrier
Different types of carriers suit different needs. But if you’re a beginner, how do you know which one to choose, especially if you have a newborn? Jennelyn “Jen” Alegarbez, a mom of four and a babywearing consultant certified by the Center for Babywearing Studies in New York, suggests two types of carriers for beginners: the ring sling and the soft-structured carrier.
A ring sling is made from a long piece of woven fabric and two rings. To wear your baby, you need to work the cloth through the rings and create a secure pouch for your infant to sit on. The sling is supported on one shoulder and worn across your torso. It is ideal for beginners because it’s easier to get on and off than other types of wraps. It’s also very versatile, not to mention strong, as you can use it until your child reaches his toddler years.

A soft structured carrier is similar to a backpack with straps over the shoulder but with a padded waistband and a padded carrying pack that can be placed either on your chest or back. It’s easy to put on, adjust, and take off, and does not require any learning compared to wraps. According to What to Expect, the advantage of this is that it distributes your baby’s weight to your hips while still offering plenty of support, so it’s a comfortable way to carry your child for longer periods.
Wearing your baby is safe, as long as you practice the correct position for your baby and use slings or carriers that have passed international safety standards.
