  • If you haven't heard yet, SmartParenting.com.ph started its very first Facebook group called the Smart Parenting (SP) Village! It's a community free of judgment where pregnant moms and moms with babies up to a year old are welcome to ask questions and share their advice with fellow Pinay moms.

Recently, one mom, SP Villager Maridel, posted this question:

“Mommies, matagal niyo bang nagamit ang stroller ninyo? Nagdadalawang isip kasi ako kung bibili ako, eh. Madalas kaming umaalis at naaawa ako kay baby ‘pag maghapon na nasa labas kami. Tapos, ako lang ang bumubuhat sa kanya, so super sakit at ngalay na braso at balikat ko. I’m a single mom. Nagpapa-dede pa ako. Super drained. Pinabibili din kasi ako nila nanay at tatay since gusto nila igala si baby sa labas. Nabibigatan na kasi sila at sobrang likot pa ni baby. Kaya lang baka hindi din magamit in the long run at masayang yung ipambibili ko.

Lots of parents will agree that you need help when you're out and about with your little one. Mahirap magbuhat! So, parents' options are often a baby carrier or a stroller. Given that both are expensive items, Maridel's question is not surprising. Here's how the SP Villagers responded:

    Votes for carrier
We commute. Hassle lang yung stroller bitbitin.
“We bought stroller na I wish ‘di na sana namin binili. Sayang talaga. Stored lang siya at inaalikabok na. We haven't used it as much bilang commuter lang naman kami, dagdag dalahin lang. We prefer a baby carrier. I love my Lillebaby, so sulit. From newborn until now na 15 months na si baby, gamit na gamit. Mas convenient for us when commuting or traveling.” — SP Villager Mary Fatima

Babywearing is fun and gives you so much freedom!
“I prefer a baby carrier. Masaya mag babywear, promise! It gives you and your baby so much freedom. My son’s turning 6 (years old) next month. I had Next9 Ringsling and Lillebaby Soft Structured Carrier (SSC). We used them heavily, from birth to about age 3. My son is quite big and heavy for his age. I like that we can go places without the bulk of a stroller. And, my arms can do so much more which makes me feel like a 'Super Nanay.'” — SP Villager Mary Margarette

My baby doesn't like being in her stroller
“Yung sa baby ko, 3 months niya lang nagamit yung stroller tapos ayaw na niya kaagad. One year old na si baby ko ngayon. Mas gusto kasi niya na buhat ko siya or na magpa-practice siya mag lakad-lakad. Feeling ko she gets bored kapag nakaupo lang sa stroller.” — SP Villager Léz

    Votes for stroller
We considered our lifestyle and went for a stroller. Super sulit!
“Sa amin, sobrang worth it ang value ng stroller. Depende na siguro sa lifestyle and size ni baby. Si Sky, who is almost 3 years old now, big boy talaga siya so yung carrier saglit lang namin nagamit, but yung stroller until now okay na okay.

“Also, if CS ka kasi mas mahirap mag-carrier lalo ‘pag matagalang buhat. I sometimes bring my baby to work din because we don't have a yaya, so puwede lang si baby mag-play or read books there. If pagod na, I let him sleep lang sa stroller, and I'm free to do my work. No yaya no problem! Of course, you just have to check on him lagi. We also love to travel so useful talaga.” — SP Villager Katz

Mas comfortable for mommy and baby ang stroller
“We started using a stroller when my daughter (who is now 6 years old) was a month old until she was 2 years old. I noticed that while we are at a mall, she was perspiring while I was holding her. I followed the recommended weight allowance of the manufacturer. I am not a fan of baby wearing, especially for summer babies. Plus, once the baby gains weight, it also gives pressure to the mom. 'Pag mabigat na, it's no joke na for the mom to be carrying the baby while asleep.” — SP Villager Aeven

    We’ve had three strollers!
“First, we had the 3-in-1 Graco stroller, but it was too bulky. We only used it for the first four months and rarely pa kasi hindi pa namin pinapasyal si baby until 6 months. We sold it and bought a lighter and cheaper one, which is a Baby 1st stroller that we used from 6 months to 13 months. Kaso parang hindi siya matibay. Nasira siya ni baby. We traded it sa Baby Company to get 20% off sa new stroller. We now use a GB Pockit stroller, which is so compact and was useful when we traveled abroad. My son is 22 months old now.

“Mas nakakalagaw ka kapag stroller. Nakakapag semi-date kami ni husband especially kapag day-off ni yaya. Sleep lang siya sa stroller while we eat or have coffee.” — SP Villager Myda Gracelle

Get a carrier and ask around for a hand-me-down stroller
“Sa amin na may car and madalas mag-travel very useful ang stroller, pero most of the time 'pag sandali lang kami sa labas, carrier ang gamit ko. For my second baby natuto na ako. Nanghingi na lang ako ng hand-me-down na stroller, crib, and car seat from my good friends.” — SP Villager May Rachel

We’ve tried both and like both
“Kung my car and yaya ka na mag-help sa'yo, I prefer the stroller. Yung umbrella-type para hindi masyado bulky. If commuter kayo, I prefer the carrier. Lightweight and maliit lang siya compared to a stroller. Just my opinion based on my experience.

“My eldest is 4 years old. His first stroller was Safety 1st and when he turned 2 years old, we changed him to an umbrella-type Chicco. For my youngest, we tried a Chicco carrier. So far, convenient din naman ang carrier. We're upgrading soon to an Ergo.” — SP Villager Grace
