  • Have a Baby = No Social Life?

Having a baby doesn’t mean an end to your social life. Here’s how to get your groove back - even with baby in tow.

  • mom baby outdoorsI couldn’t bring myself to go back to work once my maternity leave was over. How could I leave my adorable baby boy? He needs an hourly fix of breast milk, is comforted by my loving touch, and is content just hearing my soothing voice.
But let’s face it. Moms can’t be confined in their baby’s comfort zone 24/7. We all need some well-deserved R&R and “me time” to replenish our energy and liven up our spirits. Sure, it’s a hard choice to make - will you stay or will you go? There are so many factors you need to consider. Guilt may be your number one enemy. It’s normal to feel guilty when you leave your child at home, but it can also be stressful transporting him to and from your in-law’s place, for instance.

Paranoia is another - babies are so fragile and vulnerable. First, there’s the problem of germs. Outdoor spots are not advisable for very young babies, especially in a highly polluted metropolis like ours; unless of course it’s a park, where you have some semblance of fresh air. “The slightest contact with germs can most likely cause sickness in your baby’s very delicate and under-developed immune system,” explains Sherrylab Lagarto, M.D., family physician at Mandaluyong Medical Center. Second, there’s the problem of crowds. A big and unfamiliar crowd can turn up your baby’s stress levels - and yours, too. Lagarto explains that babies are not fit for big environments; that’s why visiting hours in a hospital nursery are limited and controlled. They need peace and quiet with just enough stimulation for their growth.

But don’t get disheartened just yet. Though these places are a no-no for babies, it doesn’t mean there’s no getting your way around them. Read on for tips on how to get your social life back - without abandoning your little angel.
